Description:

The BOINC team release a cross-platform GUI to control the BOINC clients. And, as always, one size doesn't fit all. The operation of the standard BOINC manager software lacks the ease of use one comes to expect when used to KDE applications. Additionally, the standard manager software is lacking in some areas.

To overcome these actual and perceived deficiencies, KBoincMgr was born into this world. The advantages of KBoincMgr are too few to mention, but if they weren't, they would include the following gems.

* The one instance of KBoincMgr can manage multiple BOINC clients. This prevents the Taskbar from becoming cluttered with many instances of boincmgr with the subsequent confusion inflicted upon the long suffering user, ie, you.

Not only is KBoincMgr imbued with this startling feature, but on startup KBoincMgr will attempt to connect to all configured clients.

How can sliced bread compete with that?

* Access to the Internet is sometimes controlled by some authorisation / authentication server. It the author's case, this is a Cisco PIX server. If the authentication lapses, completed results queue until the user authenticates with the server again. As with most things to do with security, it is a great idea and would be even better if it didn't make things harder to use.

In a futile attempt to make life easer, KBoincMgr contains a facility whereby an authorisation script can be specified for each managed BOINC client. This script can be run manually or automatically whenever a result is completed.

Since such scripts will probably contain password and other sensitive data, the user can specify which items are to be secured and KBoincMgr will store that information in the KDE KWallet facility.

* From time to time, it is also necessary to log onto the BOINC client machine. To assist in this, each managed BOINC client can have its own embedded "Konsole" window.

Now if that's not enough to get you using KBoincMgr you must be a few kangaroos short in the top paddock!

Any chance of an update which will compile with automake-1.10 and such? Hell, I'd be happy with a patch, because I've not been able to compile this program on my box (and I really want to).

Nice idea but your help file is seriously lacking in detail necessary for anyone with little networking experience to actually use it.

Hi, first of all I would like to thank for your great app. I use OpenSUSE 10.2, KDE 3.5.6, emerald 0.1.4 - theme VRunner Quicksilver, baghira 0.8 & kboincmgr 0.2.3 (from source). Now in the messages tab some lines which, I guess, should be red, are white... on white background - I can't see them, have to click on them to backlight in blue to read it.The second issue is similiar - when I scroll horizontal scroll back, and return it to previous position, on top the text is non visible unless I will put mouse cursor above.Third: the same the button with the adress of connected host: non visible, 'tip' with mouse doesn't work...

If I may I would like to ask for some features :) Ability to suspend net & cpu activity, filter to messages section and... screensaver for KScreensaver ;)

Regards, Nugrud.

Hmm, I think you would also have some colour problems with other apps as well. The colours I use are standard system colours - HTML link visited, active & etc.

However, I realise that there can be some problems here. I am working on Release 0.3 which will address this issue.

Regarding filters: the new release will have an extensive message filtering system - selected messages can be hidden, only those messages will be shown or the selected messages can be displayed in a separate colour.

As for the other features? Not sure what is possible / what I have time to do. Watch this space!

Please try release 0.3.0 as this has a message filtering facility.

The suspend CPU activity can be accomplished by using the "Suspend project" button on the Projects view.

Thanks, I made a news about 0.3.0 on my team's site:
http://www.boincatpoland.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=368

About suspending: I would like to suspend network activity and leave cpu crunching. Maybe in another version...

What about translations? I could try make a pl one if it would be welcome.

Re your team site message - I had a look at that and for all the information I got from it it might as well have been written in another language. ;)

Thanks for the publicity! :))
Re suspending net activity - will think about it.

Re Polish translation - yes, would be happy to include that.

Unfortunately, I do not know how you go about coding it. So, if you find out please send me the translation file and I'll include it in a new release.

Thanks for your interest and input - it's greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately I do not know either how to do that :/ Which file should I start to search for text to translate?

BTW. Here are kboincmgr suse packages:

Hi,
I've built a RPM package for Mandriva 2007 and installed it.

KboincMgr is working but it's very slow and slowing/freezing my machine.
I can't resize the window vertically, as if the window was bigger than my screen.

Are you using KBoincMgr to manage the machine on which KBoincMgr is running? If so, I have had this happen to me. There appears to be some problem in the TCP/IP software that hangs the KBoincMgr process. The good news is that it only hangs KBoincMgr and not the entire machine. And it does wake up again. This problem does not happen when connecting to remote boinc clients.

I can't resize the window vertically, as if the window was bigger than my screen.

Is the KBoincMgr window larger that your screen and you cannot see the title bar? If so, press the Alt key and left mouse button simultaneously and drag the KBoincMgr window so that you can see the title bar. Then just click on the Maximise button.

Thanks for answering:
It's working very well on remote hosts: localhost is very slow

For the window problem: Thanks: your tip is working.
I know why I can't see the bottom of the window: I'm attached to 27 projects (for testing purpose) and it looks like there is no scrolling bar in the KBoincMgr statistic tab: So the minimum size of that windows is very huge: bigger than the size of the KDE Desktop (I don't see the "update now" button at the bottom except if I move up the window with Alt+mouse)

Arnaud

I have just release version 0.2.3 which addresses the problems you have been experiencing. All views containing buttons should now scroll as expected.

Thx for your input.

Report

Release 0.2.3 did not address a problem regarding scrolling in the Statistics view when there are a _large_ number of projects. This has necessitated a re-think of the whole approach to selecting the project and statistics graph.

I have just release version 0.2.4 which addresses this issue (and others).

I have configured KBoincMgr to monitor my Linux and Windows PCs. When I select a computer and select the current work unit and click on the Show Graphics Button, the graphics only pops up on the Windows PCs, but not on my SuSE 10.1 64Bit PC. Any idea why? Thanks!!

This seems to be a problem with the boinc client connecting to the X server. You may find some extra messages in <path_to_BOINC>/slots/<n>/stderr.txt.

If you Google around you will find a few references to this problem. I have had a brief look but none of the suggested solutions work for me (xhost +local:).

BTW, KBoincMgr does not discriminate between Windows and *nix hosts - it cant as it doesn't know. So, the fact the Windows graphics works shows that KBoingMgr is sending the "right stuff" to the boinc client.

Please, if you do find a solution would you please post it here.

In Konsole,
I typed:
xhost +local: and hit enter
as a regular user and it worked. I can now see graphics when I click the Show Graphics button in KBoincMgr on my SuSE10.1 Machine. Thanks!!!!

Here is what I saw when I tried the command:
trekjunky@enterprise:~/BOINC> xhost +local:
non-network local connections being added to access control list
