Kubuntu 10.04 32-bit, KDE 4.5.1.
Amarok 2.3.1 at the moment.

Amarok still won't recognize an audio CD unless Amarok is launched via the Device Notifier. If you start Amarok first, and insert an audio CD, it isn't listed when clicking on Local Music.

And Amarok still crashes playing an audio CD, the latest attempt here was using Random Tracks. Played the first two tracks, and crashed part way through the third. The random track selection worked.

I still dislike having to sign up for a last.fm account just so I can see my cover art. It was not this way in the 1.4 version, and I've never understood why the art can't be retrieved from the audio CD - it is there.

CDs don't crash for me.

Last.fm for covers? You can choose that in a search, if you want -- but you certainly don't have to have a last.fm account for that to work.

Not sure where you got that idea, to be honest. What you need a last.fm account for is scrobbling, and a paid account for streams. That's it.

Well, regardless, when playing an audio CD, the album cover art isn't displayed -and it should be. That it isn't, tells me that Amarok isn't programmed to look for the album art on the audio CD.

I agree that this is a bug. Should you choose to take the time to file one, I'll gladly test and confirm. The quick way to file is from Help > Report Bug, which will automatically fill in most of the needed info about your system.

I wish the Crossfading feature in Amarok was a bit more extensive (like how it was in version 1.4). Now it works only if I stop playing the current track. But it would be better if crossfading was possible while pausing or seeking or changing to the next track. I hope this is implemented in the near future.

I've to say... I loved to use Amaro 1.4.x when I came into Linux by Knoppix some years ago.
Later then they released version 2.0 and all I thought was "what the hell have they done ?".

The collection wasn't complete at all... as soon as I tried to skip a song or select a live stream it freezes... and in the end the new looks of amarok pissed me off.

However... forced by Ubuntu 9.04 to try out v2.2 I realized it got better again.

Again I could enjoy browsing through my music library and didn't have to worry when the application starts killing itself again.

Good to see the developers did something in the past and the new feature of customize amarok also doesn't look that bad :)

Hi!
A very good program without all the unnecessary stuff that's packed into Amarok2 is Clementine - a direct port of Amarok 1.4 to qt4.
Definetely worth checking out.

Clementine requires GStreamer and pulls in a lot of extras. I would much rather use Amarok. Thanks

Clementine don't have one of my my favourite features - it is cann't manage music collection. It is player and library, but not manager. And it is important difference between Amarok and Clementine.
Amarok 1.4 was manager, Clementine do not. And so it is not direct fork.

Don't mind about idiots that complain about this and that, as we have seen for kde 4 there always will be some idiots. They will come back with a later release and when they'll realize that are using an obsolete application.

It just doesn't happen. Remake of Amarok is the killing of a great app, the one that convinced me to switch to Linux.

sticking to 1.4 is a bit like sticking to XP. there doesn't seem to be any reason for it. It is legacy software. There was stiff competition for it. Not necessarily in functionality but in look and feel. There needed to be a change. I think Amarok 2.x has really raised the bar in terms of what is expected from an media application. It's not perfect, but what is?

Read your own forums, KDE User Blogs and the LastFM Forums and you'll see many, many super unhappy users going back to A1 or other media players. A2 until now is just another buggy and ugly player like many, many others.

Maybe.

Even if Amarok 1/2 made probably in the past, I don'k know which one version, some ugly thing with tags 'album'and 'author'of some Johann Sebastian Bach works in ogg, my favourite, Amarok is still my preferred music player.

I admit it caused some psychic lability to me too, but if I'd like to complain, that situation could be my egos much bigger pleasure, than it was. :-)

Amarok 2.1.1 seems a great app. It's not perfect but seems quite promising.

Hi,
for my purpose is it the solution I prefer before other project. Some of players I tried even with all their problems without bigger lamentation probably don't exist anymore. :-) Other solutions either must still constantly grow to retreive some usable functions or are looking little slow.

I am interested in one thing: The export of entries in playlist to the editable list of these names of songs. Is there something for it. Or is there any way how to export such a list i a filemanager.

I am looking forward to Amarok 2.2. I am curious on the change in displaying of tabs (Collection, Internet, Playlists, Files) from vertical disposition to horizontal. Really I always had to rotate with my head to see these items before. :-)

The applet with 1) equalizer, or better 2) that vizualizer of spectrum of played music - osciloscope is that word? - this is the thing I would like to see placed in the the context window.

In settings - of course more setting: e. g. Replay Gain: in Audacious are some options to set it correctly.

Amarok 1.4 was easily the best player I've used, but v2 disappoints and keeps disappointing, even after all this time.

Wasting screen real estate with large unused spots and a non-removable, in your face plasmoid section, awful playlist usability, no drag-n-drop from playlist or collection to a filemanager, and all kinds of other annoyances.

And instead of focussing on usability and reimplementing the small but essential features that Amarok 1 gave us, the devs keep overreaching and re-re-re-implement 'eyecandy' here and plasmoid there.

I switched to Exaile. It isn't perfect, I had to patch it a little to get the drag-n-drop working, but at least it doesn't annoy me like Amarok 2 does.

Don't know which version you're using, but it must be pretty old. I assume buggy Jaunty with 2.0.2.
And don't write us, if you mean solely you.
Can't see any contribution from you on the official forums.
Perhaps the headline contains an error and it should be This boy sucks.
No, I don't want to start a new discussion about A2.

You're right, I'm on Jaunty. A while back I made an attempt to compile from source, but the mysql-embedded dependency was a little strange, and at that time to much hassle to satisfy. Maybe I should try again, or find a more polished .deb

That was my first and last impression of Amarok 4, as I gradualy reverted to Konsole, then Amarok 3. I don't care about hidden features, I want the overview and detail of my collection. Amarok 3 is almost perfect.

For the sake of Amarok's future, please bring back the interface of Amarok 3!
