[2010-09-30[ BasKet 2.0 Beta 2 Released

BasKet 2.0 Beta 2 has been released by Matt Rogers. Go get it!

[2010-03-23] BasKet 2.0 Beta 1 Released

The BasKet project is proud to announce the release of version 2.0 beta 1. This version serves as a pre-release version for developers and distributors and should not be considered suitable for a production system. BasKet 2.0 will be a new major release which brings Qt4 and KDE 4 compatibility to BasKet and paves the way for future releases which take advantage of KDE 4 technologies such as Akonadi and Nepomuk. Due to the pervasive nature of these changes, there may be inevitable bugs in some features of the new release. However, the new version is in many ways more stable and robust than previous releases (especially when running on the KDE 4 platform) and users are recommended to switch to the new version when it comes out.

We hope to release version 2.0 within a few months.

Previous versions of BasKet, which depended on KDE 3 libraries, are now considered deprecated and will no longer be maintained.

This is great!

I have two question/requests:

1. Can we have an option to store data elsewhere? I like to use my notes on my desktop and on my laptop, and storing them in the $HOME/.kde tree doesn't work for me (I don't want to synchronize all the setups with my laptop, just the data). I know that $HOME/.kde/share/apps/ is the 'standard' place for data, but I think it is a stupid idea.

2. Cut and paste sometimes doesn't. I'm not sure why yet, but when I paste sometimes, the computer freezes for about 10 seconds and then pastes two spaces. Other times it works fine.

Anyway, apart from that, this app is a winner.
cheers

I agree - the ability to store baskets elsewhere (or transfer/synch them easily between different computers) is one of the features that would make this application a real killer. ;-)

Does 0.6 already feature a kicker applet? That's the one thing that keeps me from using this app, I need it to be always visible and accessible (other than popping the whole app up through a systray icon) to really make use of this, and I'd love to :)

Just a simple applet with drag & drop functionality which shows tha last n additions to a certain basket, that would be awesome!

Hi! Thanks for the nice piece of work :)

Run "basket --start-hidden".

In a future version, there could be a graphical option to that, since lot of people asked it.

You would not have been able to convince me that you could make an improvement on sticky notes... But boy this is quite an improvemnt!

My only hope is that someday Basket contents will be optionally encrypted...

Report

Sebien

Baskets already can be encrypted with a GPG private/public key, or a simple password.

But it need some libraries like libgpgme.

Run ./configure by hand and at the end, it should warn you if you do not have the needed libraries, and it will tell you where to download them.

If it doesn't complain, it should work.
It's in the "Basket" menu: click "Password..." to set up one.

If ./configure doesn't complain but the feature is not there, then please post a bug report.

Praise the Lord! What an amazing application this is. I can hardly remember I've seen a more well-designed application that this, version 0.6. It's very graphical, it's not the ordinary KDE widget style. It's simply outstanding.

It's great to see kontact integration! I'm just hoping my edgy setup includes this so I won't have to compile from scratch :)

However, "not using the ordinary KDE widget style" would be a negative for me, not a positive. I have a KDE style pre-chosen, and for the sake of familiarity, ease-of-use, and overall desktop integration, I prefer KDE apps that stick to the same style guidelines.

Nice app, especially the dev. version!
One thing that I'm missing (or maybe just haven't found yet?) is the ability to filter using a date or date range, like 'show all items that were added yesterday'. Maybe incorporate a KDE calendar widget...? This would greatly ease searching for me, and allow me to look back at any date to see what I've been doing more or less because when I see the items that I added then, I will remember :-)

Report

Sebien

Very nice idea.

Here is the mockup I came up by thinking to your date filtering use case:

Between the filter text edit and the tag combobox, I will add a calendar icon that, when clicked, popup that menu:

x No date filtering
[ Last Modified... ]
Today
Yesterday
This week
Last week
Before >
After >
[ Added... ]
Today
Yesterday
This week
Last week
Before >
After >

So user can check one option.
"Before" and "After" popup a calendar to choose a date.

I don't know if it's needed to search in a range.

Looks nice!
Maybe also add a 'specific date' option so you can choose any date, maybe even by using a calendar widget?
Date ranges might be handy, but maybe more difficult (gui-wise) to implement? They could turn out handy when not remembering exactly when you added something.

is there an option where you can set which browser to open a URL in basket? i was using this the past few weeks(til my monitor failed) and i can't seem to do that. i want it to open using FF or another browser of my choice...

Please use the following instructions to change the Web browser to use:
http://basket.kde.org/configure-links-openning.php

As it seams to be a very requested option, I will add it in the Configuration dialog, so people won't need to install KControl (and the whole kdebase package) just to change the browser, like in Amarok 1.4.
