Description:

Cantata is a (yet another!) client for the music player daemon (MPD). Originally started as a fork of QtMPC, the code is now *very* different. Cantata can be compiled with KDE support, or as a pure Qt4 application. The interface is very configurable - most views can be shown as either a list or tree structure.

Currently Cantata has the following views:

1. Library - Group by either Genre, Album Artist (or Artist if Album Artist not set), or Album
2. Folders - displays MPDs virtual filesystem. (This view is hidden by default)
3. Playlists - standard, dyamic, and smart
4. Internet - Radio Streams (allows saving of internet radio URLs, searching for stations via TuneIn or ShoutCast, station listings from; Digitally Imported (+Sky, JazzRadio, RockRadio), TuneIn, IceCast, ShoutCast, SomaFM, etc.) and Online services (Jamendo, Magnatune, SoundCloud, and Podcasts)
5. Devices - enables copying from/to USB-Mass-Storage (UMS) and MTP devices, and ripping AudioCDs
6. Search - search via MPD

The sidebar has a context menu, allowing you to control its style and what items are shown.

Refer to http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Client:Cantata, and https://raw.githubusercontent.com/CDrummond/cantata/master/README, for further information.

here a patch for the cantata PKGBUILD from aur.
Simply save this in the same directory as the PKGBUILD and call it "debug.patch"
Then run makepkg

oops, forgot the modification to the PKGBUILD:

build(){
cd $srcdir/${pkgname}-${pkgver}
patch -p0 mpd/mpdconnection.cpp < ../../debug.patch
mkdir build && cd build

Hi, I had the same "volume" issue as zeltakc describes.
The problem was that in mpd.conf the volume setting was "hardware". I' ve set it to "software" and everything is fine now.
Hope I've helped. Cheers.

Just tried with hardware mixer - but still no error messages.

Can you enable the debug? If so, do you see cantata sending extra "setvol XX" (where XX = volume level) messages??

Report

thx

that seemed to solve the issue

cool :)

Hi again

1)concerning the volume pop up bug, there are no other clients running. it happens only when you add files/albums to the playlist not when swtiching tracks/albums from the playlist. if i open another client and add tracks the volume popups doesnt come up.

2)what i mean by adding info in the playlist is not using the spread sheet type playlist but actually the beautiful cantata one. i was just wondering if it could be user customizable like in amarok (using the playlist layout editor: http://paste.xinu.at/EzN/).
that way each user can choose which fields to show in the playlist

3)can you add the "edit tracks" option in the playlist , i often tag songs while they play as you can see if the tags are wrong.

4)there is a new mpd option (in git but maybe in stable) to "add after current" (basicly a queue option). can that be added to the menus and icons?

Also would you consider maybe opening a Irc chat/forum/google group? i think cantata is growing rapidly (i have loads of friends that started using it recently), would be easier to communicate :)

best

1. Again, I still dont see this. Did you try enabling the debug? Kinda hard to fix a problem I dont see, without the extra info.

2. Not at the moment. I'm running out of spare time to do this, and Cantata already fills my needs. The amarok thing I think is just way too complex.

3. Will think about this for the next release.

4. I have *no* idea how to do this :-(

I keep meannig to add the code to googlecode, as I have an account there, so perhaps this will help. Then, I hope at least, some others can add the missing bits...

Just noticed my mistake... The "i have no idea how to do this" was in reference to setting up forums/irc...

As to suggestion 4... You can drag and drop songs into place, so I see no real point to a "add after current"

One thought with the volume issue, do you have 'Fadout on stop' set? If so, try changing this so that it says 'Do not fadeout'. Does that help???

I also have some feature request:
1. A button for quick access to activated, e.g. opening a radio list like in GMPC
2. Make library search configurable to search all tags at once (at least artist, album and title). So I can search for "pink floyd wish" to find the "Wish You Were Here" album or track.
3. I really don't like my music player to make changes to my music folder, so I don't think automatically writing cover arts directly to the music folder is a good idea. Also my cover arts are not named "cover.jpg", but most times $ALBUMNAME.jpg/png
4. Finally a rather unimportant one: make the cover art in the upper left corner bigger, add more tag infos besides the buttons: comment, file type, bitrate

As long time Amarok user and fan this project finally seems to provide a good GUI for mpd :-)

Report

1. ??? Not sure what you mean by 'activated' here???
2. All tagas are searched, but how would I know that 'pink floyd' is the artist, and 'wish' was for the song? I guess using tags would help - artist:pink floyd song:wish
3. Then point cantata to a non-existant folder - that way covers will not be saved there. Perhaps for 0.6.0 I'll add an option to not auto-save downloaded covers to the library.
4. I like the cover size as is, fits with the size of the text and buttons. 'Comment' - why? At the moment Cantata ignores 'comment' - I have no need for this. File type and bitrate I could perhaps add as a tooltip, but I really dont see why this is important enough to always be present.

1. Ouch, I've forgotten a word :) I've meant quick access to activated sound outputs. GMPC has a menu entry for it and I'm using it to activate/deavtivate mpd's output to various sound cards
2. Actually it is not important which one is the artist or title. Of course a song called "Floyd - Wish you were pink" would be found, too. But still it would be more intutive to search for songs. E.g. GMPC offers a search option "any" to search all tags and it's the default behaviour of Amarok and Exaile.
3. Any chance to recognize the first image found in the album folder? ;)
4. Well, I'm using the comment tag for extended infos about the recording, e.g. "2012 remastered version", but that stuff is just cosmetic.

Report

hya

yeah a quick access to the sound outputs would be great (and an option to assign keyboard shortcuts to quick switch the mpd outputs could be great to)

i also like the search anything option in gmpc alot. actually a tiny but off topic it would be super cool if one could tie the cantata search to krunner and add songs through krunner :)

1. What is the real use-case? when do you need such quick access?? I have no problem adding it, just dont want to clutter the UI if I can avoid it.
2. Ah, see what you mean - seach each word individually.
3. Could do

Report

1. Well, I'm using one soundcard connected to my hifi stereo and one sound card connected to my headphones amp. So I can disable the output to the stereo while using the headphones.
Another use case that comes to my mind is enabling http stream output for friends while listening.
These are IMHO cool features in mpd that make mpd unique ;)

But cantata already allows you to control/switch outputs, via the config dialog. Neither of your scenarios requires the output be accessible via a menu.

Report

I'm doing this at least 10 times a week but I could probably write a small tool with systray icon for this task myself.

I've built without KDE support and got this message:
"Building WITHOUT KDE support - Device Sync, Track Organizer, ReplayGain, and CommandLine support DISABLED"

Why is ReplayGain disabled? This is handled by mpd anyway, isn't it?

Report

C

CraigD

Cantata contains code to calculate replaygain tags, and store these back to your audio files. Without KDE support, this functionality is missing. I agree, the message could be clearer :)

when mpds database has changed, cantata needs to fetch all the informations anew. (whyever that is, an mpd client normally does not need a copy of the database)

anyway, this can be quite slow if mpd is on another machine. maybe sync the database with lazy loading, not blocking the UI.

Report

C

CraigD

The UI should not be blocked when loading the database, as the MPD connection is in another thread. However, when the database is loaded Cantata then compares this with its existing copy, and checks for additions/removals - but this should be fairly quick. The only 'blocking' is probably because whilst the MPD thread is reading/processing the database it cant be sending play, etc, commands. I could resolve this by having 1 more mpd connection - one for updating the DB, and one for sending commands.

As to why the whole DB is read - that's they way it was with QtMPC (which Cantata is based upon). It does cache the DB to an XML file, so subsequent restarts should be faster. Having the whole DB does help with things like device sync - as I can then check if a file is already in the DB very quickly.
