Description:

Cantata is a (yet another!) client for the music player daemon (MPD). Originally started as a fork of QtMPC, the code is now *very* different. Cantata can be compiled with KDE support, or as a pure Qt4 application. The interface is very configurable - most views can be shown as either a list or tree structure.

Currently Cantata has the following views:

1. Library - Group by either Genre, Album Artist (or Artist if Album Artist not set), or Album
2. Folders - displays MPDs virtual filesystem. (This view is hidden by default)
3. Playlists - standard, dyamic, and smart
4. Internet - Radio Streams (allows saving of internet radio URLs, searching for stations via TuneIn or ShoutCast, station listings from; Digitally Imported (+Sky, JazzRadio, RockRadio), TuneIn, IceCast, ShoutCast, SomaFM, etc.) and Online services (Jamendo, Magnatune, SoundCloud, and Podcasts)
5. Devices - enables copying from/to USB-Mass-Storage (UMS) and MTP devices, and ripping AudioCDs
6. Search - search via MPD

The sidebar has a context menu, allowing you to control its style and what items are shown.

A dynamic playlist function would be kinda neat to have. What this does: It adds X tracks to the playlist and makes sure its always equally filled. (mpds consume mode can take care of this) remove last played song and cantata adds a new one instantly at the end of the playlist.

Advanced functionality that would be nice: filter it by artist, genre, etc... maybe even lookup similar tracks/artists on last.fm...

wow was about to ask this myself..that would be really cool to have in cantata

z.

P.S seems like cantata has been growing rapidly in terms of users lately..thats really cool :)

Please add support for album artist tag. Albums with this tag should be shown under "Various Artists"

Mpd supports it, so it makes perfect sense to include it into cantata...

Report

I was too fast with this request. Actually you DO support it. But an option to make those appear as Various Artists would still be nice.

I'm not 100% certain what you are asking for here. Do you mean that cantata should be checking for albums which have 1 album artist, but multiple artists? And then file these under 'Various Artists'?

Hi again

How are you?

I have some more bugs to report:

1)every few songs i get a red warrning saying:

"problems setting volume"

it dosent happen in other mpd clients, i wonder why its popping up?

2)the kde song notificatinons lag a bit (takes a few seconds for them to appear) and when you quiclkly change tracks they stack up the current one and hide the current notification

requests:

1)could we have auto scrolling lyrics (speed set by tempo/time of song/user)

2)is it possible (like in amarok) to have the info in the playlist be user configurable..that is add file type or remove number of tracks..etc

thx again

1. Cantata does not alter the volume when song changes, but it does read the MPD status. Do you have any otehr clients running that could be changing the volume? To see the messages sent between Cantata and MPD, edit mpd/mpdconnection.cpp and remove the double slashes (//) from lines 39 and 40. Then recompile.

2. Not much I can do about this, I'm just using the standard KDE notification system.

3. Auto scrolling lyrics, must admit I *hate* that feature - I don't like the text moving whilst I'm trying to read.

4. By playlist, I assume you mean the play queue? The table style play queue allows you to have more information shown - but not everything.

I assume it has hotkey support in KDE version?

Yes - and there are quite a lot of them :)

Grouped album option in playlist view as well would be great. Just like in playque.

At last the perfect music player, but not for non-KDE users!

Formerly instead of buttons I had legible texts: Play, Stop, Previous, Next etc. But they're jumbled now though usable. And volume icon has always been hidden, again usable when you mouse over there.

And Cantata can't load many album covers this time.

Report

Icons are missing? The icon names should be from the free-desktop spec, so should load. Have the icons *always* been missing?

I've not changed the album cover loading code. You would need to send me more details of which covers you cant load.

Report

lionhater

No, formerly covers were not missing, they're now. All of my covers are cover.jpg inside the album folders as well as embedded in the (FLAC) tracks. Looked at a few of them. For example, a 34K jpg is missing while 12K and 124K jpgs are not. What else do you need to know?

Report

CraigD

Cantata will not read, or use, the embedded covers. Apart from filesize, whatelse is different between the displayed and missing ones? Are the missing ones owned by a different user, or group? Is the folder structure different? ie. does one, or more, of the folders contain odd chararcters? (Just guessing here...)

Report

I can't see anything different really. They're all on a network drive and well-organized. For example some covers of Camel are missing and some are not. All the Bach covers are missing except one. All the Beatles covers are missing etc.

Perhaps I should re-scan library?

Report

If possible, coud you email me one of the missing covers?

Also, if you email me I can send you a copy of the code with extra debug - so I can see what is going on.

Report

Sure, but I don't know how to attach it. Couldn't see such an option in this site's email service. Any other way?

You can send Craig an email.
His email can be found in the AUTHORS file (in the tarball).

Hi again

Agian i gotta say how much i enjoy using cantata..just love it!

as promised ;-) here are some feature suggestions (by no mean "requests" ;-)) i thought you might find usefull:

1) use "backdrops" of the band behind the lyrics and mabe other views instead of the boring white bakcground. gmpc (a fantastic gtk mpd client) have beed using that for quite a while and i have been helping out there with the design. see example:

http://paste.xinu.at/b9J3/

backdrops btw can be auto fetched if one wants from http://www.htbackdrops.com/v2/index.php (they have a good API)

2) add an updateDB menu/button to manully launch a mpd database update

3)add support for the 'comment' tag in the tag editor (mpd supports the comment tag if enabled in .mpdconf)

4) have an option to jump to an album / add an album from te current playing song. that us right click on the current playing track and then get a go to album or add full album to playlist etc..

5) have an option to set bigger lyrics size or maybe have user options to change size/type of font?

would be intrested to hear your thought

best

Z.

1. Interesting idea. Not sure how well it would really work.I guess I'd need some sort of halo/blur behind the text...

2. The 'refresh' buttons in the library, albums, and folder views should trigger an MPD rebuild

3. Not sure. What is its use? Must admit I *always* strip the comment fields from my files. At the moment, Cantata caches all MPD information into an XML file (~/.cache/cantata/library/*.xml). This helps speed up restarts. The tag editor currently only supports the tags that are also in this file. Adding support for "comments" seems a little too much. I'd also need to add save/restore code for each file type - possible, just needs to be done.

4. Might be useful.

5. You can already increase the font size by using ctrl+mousewheel

Hya again

Thx for the quick response and the tip about the lyrics!

btw small bug aobut that, the lyrics zoom size isnt saved between session..no biggie...just to let you know.

As for the comment tag, i actually use it to have a "rating" system since mpd dosent really supports rating or "starts". i just tag a Fav song with 'F' (thats where the internal tag option in cantata could be cool). again its not a huge issue if its hard to add to the tag view.

Be warned that more ideas will follow as i continue to use cantata ;-)

thx again for all your work again!

Z.

P.S do you plan to maybe have a website/forum/irc channel for cantata?
