I had the same issue on openSUSE 13.1 until I read the doc that says you need to restart/reboot. After rebooting it worked.

You might want to try testing redshift first, try this command:

redshift -O 2000

If this doesn't change anything then the problem might be redshift itself, or KDE.

Not sure how the color change is achieved, maybe it requires the desktop effects to be enabled ? (openGL)

I'm using these versions:
redshift-1.7-12.1.3.x86_64
plasmoid-redshift-0.6.2-1.6.x86_64

The first time redshift plasmoid is installed the PC must be restarted in order to automatically launch redshiftautostart that is a small utility that enables all the functionalities of redshift. If this program is not running redshift-plasmoid won't work.

You can execute:

ps -Al |grep redshiftautostart

to check it's running.

The desktop effects are not needed to make redshift work.

Check out these awesome ideas: http://justgetflux.com/news/pages/mac/

The KDE Redshift could potentially add those types of features. It'd be pretty awesome…

This may be implemented in the future, but before we need to wait the redshift implement the dbus support.

Many thanks for making this plasmoid. It works wonders and is a real eye-saver for long programming sessions! :)

After adding the ppa in Mint 16 KDE the package couldn't be found. I then tried to compile from source, but couldn't get kde-workspace-dev to be installed because of missing dependencies...

Please help! This plasmoid worked great for me in Mint 15, and neither f.lux (only one of two monitors) nor redshift from the command line work properly for me.
With redshift I get the following error:
(process:17981): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_instance_get_private: assertion 'instance != NULL && instance->g_class != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault

Is there some way to delete this comment? Sorry for the double post, I'm new here...

You need to ask the respository maintainer to build the redshift plasmoid package for ubuntu 13.10 if you want it trough repository.

Try this command to build it from source:
cmake -DQT_QMAKE_EXECUTABLE=/usr/bin/qmake-qt4 -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$(kde4-config --prefix) ..

What is the exact error you get?

When I click donate it leads me a page where I can donate to your email address, so... I mean it would be cool if I was magically bilingual haha but i'm too lazy to learn another language sorry

Also BEFORE I press donate -- THAT page is in english but when I go past that it changes and I do not think I have a paypal account and if I do I think i've forgotten it
I should really install keepass i'll do that now

I was going to donate, but I'm only good at reading english and google translate was a bit too iffy and I didn't wanna risk anything, so if you could look into this please I may throw some money for the project if you want any haha

First of all, thanks for you intention to donate. I haven't understood the problem, the donation form should be in english, isn't it? I saw it in english through kde apps.

Not an urgent feature by ANY means, but I like presets so if you could, oh wait this is going to be really tough becasue the numbers are way off

.... well maybe a good 4700 for a default but xflux, the command utility for f.lux has the numbers a lot more accurate and about 1000k lower than redshift,

so if someone from the redshift team could fix that, (like they did in the WINDOWS redshift) ... then this would be a great feature to add but as it stands it's going to be very hard to make true presets because the numbers are off by a lot

guess we will have to wait huh...

I have used this in opensuse but I mainly use Ubuntu / Linux Mint KDE and if you could port this to ubuntu that would be awesome so thank you SO MUCH for your hard work with all the scripts and what not, and if you find time, i'd love to download this again!!!

Thank you!

Hi,
unfortunately I can't pack this software for any distribution, so if you want a package for ubuntu you should open a package request on the correct ubuntu section.

Actually there is already an open package request:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1008967
You should comment there to urge them!

You can also install it from source in the meanwhile, it's easy!
Just follow the instructions in the README file.

I report them here in any case:
Install these packages:
build-essential
cmake
kde-workspace-dev
redshift
checkinstall

Execute this from the main folder of the source you've downloaded form here:

mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$(kde4-config --prefix) ..
make
sudo checkinstall install

Thank you so much for the quick reply

If I have time I will comment haha I have PLENTY of time today so I may do that if I don't have to sign up for someting because I don't want to have to remember all these logins

I may just build it from the commands you posted as well so thanks for that as well

This is just a GREAT plasmoid with the vector icon I can make it huge and it looks great, it's SO much better than GTK-redshift haha I hated that so this is just awesome

You should comment or you'll never see an official ubuntu package maybe. Use keepassx to remember the password!

Stay tuned, I'm going to release a small update in few days with an OSD to display the manual color temperature.

Bye

okay I will DEFINATELY install keepass haha
I actually remembered my launchpad password (and email)
AMAZING haha

and I commented ( i think) you may wanna make sure I did that correctly if you don't mind

Keep up the features, and would it be possibly to not kill redshift but have it update the color temp with a smooth fade or is redshift not made to do that?

Hi, I installed a new system with redshift and then compiled the latest 0.51 version of the plasma widget. The instructions didn't tell me that I needed to install g++ but once I did that it worked. But then I had the icon problem.

All I had was file:///usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/redshift-status-manual.svgz

I moved the icons from my old system into the new one and now it works, everything is great! But you should know that this didn't work right automatically.

Report

Those icons are provided by the gtk-redshift package. I'll update redshift plasmoid to provide those icons, so that will not be required to install gtk-redshift.

Hi! I'm trying to install this through the command line and I stumbled upon this error when running the "make" command:

make
[ 0%] Built target plasma_engine_redshift_automoc
Linking CXX shared module ../lib/plasma_engine_redshift.so
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkworkspace
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [lib/plasma_engine_redshift.so] Error 1
make[1]: *** [dataengine/CMakeFiles/plasma_engine_redshift.dir/all] Error 2

Any suggestions?
