Kirocker Music Display
Audio
Score 86%
Description:

Make your Kicker (the KDE main panel) rock with your music.

It is a Kicker applet that displays what you listen to in Amarok.
A full-screen display can also be used independently of the applet.

With this panel applet, you always know what you are listening to, and can watch its cover and star rating: it is always visible.
It allows you to rate your music with one click: you can quickly change the number of stars of your musics from anywhere on your desktop.
Finally, it let you remotely control Amarok with one click from anywhere on your desktop: play next or previous track, pause, play, and seek to another position in the current track.

You also have the possibility to show your currently playing music in a beautiful full-screen display. Ideal for parties or to listen to music while doing something else away from the computer.
The full-screen display can be triggered independently of the panel applet. You can start it from the KMenu or from Amarok itself.

To install:
- You need to have automake 1.9 installed for the compilation to work. It should be Ok on modern Linux distributions. You also need Python for the Amarok script to work (optional). This should also be Ok.
- Extract the archive
- Open a konsole in the extracted folder (in Konqueror, go to the extracted folder and press F4)
- Run this set of command: ./configure --prefix=$(kde-config --prefix) && make && sudo make install
- It will asks your root password to install the applet on your system
- Right click the Kicker, choose "Add an Applet to the Panel..." (once the panel is unlocked)
- Double-click "Kirocker Music Display"
- Start playing a music. The applet is empty when Amarok is stopped or paused, to not annoy you with useless information when you are working
- If you do not want the panel applet, the full-screen display can be trigerred from the KMenu or from Amarok itself (restart Amarok, enable the "Kirocker Music Display" script, and then right-click the playlist to see the action to show full-screen)

Note: After an upgrade from a previous version, press Alt+F2 and type the command "kicker default restart" to restart the Panel with the new installed version.

How to make the Kicker translucent:
The Kicker translucent white vertical background is also included in the package.
- Your screen resolution need to be 1280*800. If not, you will need some artistic skills and a Gimp experience to modify the given background
- Extract the image "Kicker Right Translucent Background.png" located in the Kirocker Music Display archive
- Open your desktop background image with The Gimp
- Drag and drop "Kicker Right Translucent Background.png" to the Gimp window of your background image
- Save the image and set it as your desktop background image
- Right click the Kicker and choose "Configure the Panel..." (once the panel is unlocked)
- Place the panel on the right (click the button on the right)
- Set the size to "Personalized" and enter "96 pixels"
- In the "Appearance" tab, check "Enable transparency"
- Click "Ok" and you're done: ENJOY!

4.0:
- Theme support with wonderful ones provided by default and a graphical editor that is both powerful and surprisingly easy to use
- Have fun karaokees with automatically-scrolling lyrics
- Added a better no-cover image, from Oxygen (sorry guys, but it's the only beautiful and scalable image I found)
- Now using the "Track, Artist, Album" order (instead of "Artist, Album, Track") to be more complient with other displays, such as iPod, Last.fm, and even Amarok.
- Changed the application icon to a better one, using an Oxygen composition. Also show the icon back in the panel big tooltip, as it cannot be confused with an empty cover image anymore
- Removed a lot of bugs
- Enhanced performances

pardon me if i ask such a stupid question. but what animation? i don't see any animation. i've build and installed kirocker 3.0Beta1 but i don't see any animation, could you give me any hints of what it looks like?? maybe my eyes too tired to see it??? or did i build the package wrong??

just occurred to me, maybe i need to restart my KDE after updating kirocker?

Report

Oh, yes you need to restart the panel to get the new version working.

I haven't tought to say it.

Three methods:

- Remove the applet and re-add it again. Not sure it will work.

- If it doesn't work, type Alt+F2 and type the command "killall -sTERM kicker ; sleep 0.5 ; kicker"

- Or, if you prefer a simpler solution, restart KDE :-)

i use the second method :)
now i see the animation :D

fluent enough for me, and sometime i see the glitches.

however, the fullscreen mode does not work fine with mergedFB or Xinerama configs.

if there are two displays and the desktop is e.g. 2560 x 1024 (2 screens with 1280x1024), your applet is showing with the size of the desktop but only on one screen meaning that the half of your applet is not seen.

potential for improvement, but excellent idea!

Added to the roadmap.

But *DEVELOPERS ARE WANTED*.

I do not have dual-screen, so I cannot test.

And, ultimately, there should be an option to define on what screen the full-screen mode is shown. Or better, be able to move it directly from the full-screen mode itself.

A tiny installation bug:

Very nice app. I was always looking for something like this and already thougt I had to write it myself, but kirocker fits perfectly.

How about making a screensaver with the fullscreen app? (I dont have a clue about how to make a screensaver)

Report

Sebien

Already in the roadmap:

4.0:
- If user is inactive & is playing, show full screen a few seconds before screensaver

This does not replace the screensaver but triggers a few seconds before the screensaver (and the fullscreen mode blocks the screensaver, so it's the same).

Advantages of this technic:
- If you are not playing anything, your normal screensaver is used (instead of a blank full-screen mode).
- No external configuration needed, all is in the applet configure dialog.
- Less code do produce on my part ;-) [That one is just a sideeffect, not a priority. Of course, priority is to have a usable application that just works]

Report

bulsa

If that is your way, could you include an option to lock the screen, because my point is to be able to have a nice screen with a musicplayer but keep the rest locked?

Report

Sebien

Ah, locking is something I haven't tought to.

So, perhapse it will effectively be good to be a real screensaver to benefit from those features easily and safely.

Another reason why I wanted not to be a screensaver is that the applet poll Amarok 3 times per seconds to ask what is the status (played track, progress...). This is well optimised, so that if the applet is running at the same time as the screensaver, only one poll is done and both the applet and the full-screen are updated accordingly. This save CPU ressources over separate applet & full-screen.

Anyway, I will see...

First of all, thanks you for kirocker, it's exactly what I was looking for :)

And then some wishlist items:

* when the track is just paused, grey out the cover (or apply some other visual effect) instead of hiding the applet

And in fullscreen mode:

* add a tooltip on the prev and next buttons with prev and next track titles (or "random" or such if in random mode)

* overlay effects are quite slow, I guess the code can be improved there

* this is though but... embed a box for a visualization plug-in

* at the moment it seems to be using the small version of the album cover, which of course looks ugly when scaled

ups... I found one bug

When i use radio from last.fm Kirocker isn't updating title http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/5260/kirocker1mx0.jpg

Is kde-apps good place for submiting bugs? I couldn't find any hint where to submit bugs for this app.

Report

Well, this project has no other home than kde-apps. So it is a good place to report bugs :)

In fact, Amarok DCOP interface is quite buggy for Last.fm radios.

For instance, I will never be able to get the cover art (in the actual version of Amarok, of course). There is also no DCOP call for "Ignore/Love/Next" actions (I would want to replace "Prev/Pause/Next" by those actions).

Handling Last.fm stations now would take too much CPU ressources. But I finally found some way that will be Ok.

I add the Last.fm support in the roadmap.

Kirocker as a replacement for an Amarok tray icon.
It's my idea...
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2821/kirockerzm1.jpg

See on this screenshot, when I click on this empty
part on the right of "faithless" I would like to
see main window of Amarok. So than I could stop
using Amarok-tray (panel on top in my
configuration)

Also there could be option to hide this small
stars. I clicked it by accident 2-3 times, and i
use this application for 15 minutes ;]

btw. really nice coded application. Better than i
thought it be ;] greetings

Thanks.

I also tought to replace the Amarok tray icon :)
The problem is that when you disable the Amarok
tray icon, you can't hide the Amarok main window
anymore. If you close the main window, the entire
Amarok application quit. You have to have the
Amarok window in your taskbar.

Hum, yes perhapse an option to disable stars is
needed. Will be in version 4.0, with all other
options.

Thank you very much.

I have got all my development experience from BasKet Note Pads.

From that project, I learnt programmation: how to optimize drawings and double-bufferize to not have any flicker, allowing the amazing animations I plan to add soon.

And I also learnt usability: Fitt's law, make "it just work", make the default values right for 95% of users and only then, add configuration... I choosen KDE for its configurability, so I will add configuration.

That's very nice to program for another application such as Kirocker Music Display. It's fun again ;-)

hi there, i really love your applet. i have to confess, i never really at this applet before. but now i fall in love :-).

i've created RPMs for opensuse, available at my website and my repos.
i put your Kicker_Right_Translucent_Background.png (i renamed it, i hope that's alright) and a tranculent_howto file (pasted from this page & modified) in /usr/share/doc/packages/kirocker/transculent_bg

keep up the good work. and thanks for making this applet.
