Kirocker Music Display

Description:

Make your Kicker (the KDE main panel) rock with your music.

It is a Kicker applet that displays what you listen to in Amarok.
A full-screen display can also be used independently of the applet.

With this panel applet, you always know what you are listening to, and can watch its cover and star rating: it is always visible.
It allows you to rate your music with one click: you can quickly change the number of stars of your musics from anywhere on your desktop.
Finally, it let you remotely control Amarok with one click from anywhere on your desktop: play next or previous track, pause, play, and seek to another position in the current track.

You also have the possibility to show your currently playing music in a beautiful full-screen display. Ideal for parties or to listen to music while doing something else away from the computer.
The full-screen display can be triggered independently of the panel applet. You can start it from the KMenu or from Amarok itself.

To install:
- You need to have automake 1.9 installed for the compilation to work. It should be Ok on modern Linux distributions. You also need Python for the Amarok script to work (optional). This should also be Ok.
- Extract the archive
- Open a konsole in the extracted folder (in Konqueror, go to the extracted folder and press F4)
- Run this set of command: ./configure --prefix=$(kde-config --prefix) && make && sudo make install
- It will asks your root password to install the applet on your system
- Right click the Kicker, choose "Add an Applet to the Panel..." (once the panel is unlocked)
- Double-click "Kirocker Music Display"
- Start playing a music. The applet is empty when Amarok is stopped or paused, to not annoy you with useless information when you are working
- If you do not want the panel applet, the full-screen display can be trigerred from the KMenu or from Amarok itself (restart Amarok, enable the "Kirocker Music Display" script, and then right-click the playlist to see the action to show full-screen)

Note: After an upgrade from a previous version, press Alt+F2 and type the command "kicker default restart" to restart the Panel with the new installed version.

How to make the Kicker translucent:
The Kicker translucent white vertical background is also included in the package.
- Your screen resolution need to be 1280*800. If not, you will need some artistic skills and a Gimp experience to modify the given background
- Extract the image "Kicker Right Translucent Background.png" located in the Kirocker Music Display archive
- Open your desktop background image with The Gimp
- Drag and drop "Kicker Right Translucent Background.png" to the Gimp window of your background image
- Save the image and set it as your desktop background image
- Right click the Kicker and choose "Configure the Panel..." (once the panel is unlocked)
- Place the panel on the right (click the button on the right)
- Set the size to "Personalized" and enter "96 pixels"
- In the "Appearance" tab, check "Enable transparency"
- Click "Ok" and you're done: ENJOY!

4.0:
- Theme support with wonderful ones provided by default and a graphical editor that is both powerful and surprisingly easy to use
- Have fun karaokees with automatically-scrolling lyrics
- Added a better no-cover image, from Oxygen (sorry guys, but it's the only beautiful and scalable image I found)
- Now using the "Track, Artist, Album" order (instead of "Artist, Album, Track") to be more complient with other displays, such as iPod, Last.fm, and even Amarok.
- Changed the application icon to a better one, using an Oxygen composition. Also show the icon back in the panel big tooltip, as it cannot be confused with an empty cover image anymore
- Removed a lot of bugs
- Enhanced performances

Ah! Thanks very much.
This will be awesome... no more hack!

I hope it will be easier with Plasma in KDE 4. From what I've read, it seems possible to create a plasmoid to draw the panel background.

Hi Sebien,

I like kirocker very much. But there is one thing I miss: a dcop command to return from fullscreen. So that we can use remote control for starting/ending fullscreen mode.
If I don't use it in KDE-panel,I use a script like:
Quote:

status=`ps -o comm -C kirocker --noheader`

if [ "$status" = 'kirocker' ] ;then

killall kirocker
else
kirocker
fi

But if it is running in the panel, there is no process 'kirocker' an I'am not able to quit it with a command.

For the moment you can trigger the Escape key so that the full screen display will quit.

In a future release, I will add a closeFullScreen() method in the "kicker Kirocker" DCOP interface.

To celebrate Kirocker Music Display Beta 3, I'm offering a wonderful new theme:

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Deep+Down+Kirocker+Theme?content=70075

If you have Beta 3, download the file to you computer and simply open it.
It will automatically install and show as your new theme. Isn't that amazing?

Hi again Sebian

Just installed mythbuntu and of course amarok and Kirocker with it. Kirocker is the highlight of my living room now :)!

one small question/request i have that comes from using kirocker in the living room. is there any chance you can add keyboard shortcuts to the scroll up/down in the lyrics? i would love using lirc and a remote for that!

as someone said before everything you touch is gold (i also LOVE basket!!!)

thx alot again!

Ah, very interesting!

The lyrics shortcut is something I haven't tought to.

It's an excelent solution and I will implement it shortly.

In fact, I just implemented it.
It will be in 4.0, or in 4.0 Beta 3 if there is one (I still have a lot of things to polish for the final version).

If you want to have the feature right now, there is only a few source files to edit (with eg. KWrite):

In the file src/fullscreen.cpp:
Search for that line:
case Qt::Key_L: m_coverDisplay->toggleLyrics(); break;
And add those two lines just after:
case Qt::Key_U: m_coverDisplay->scrollLyricsUp(); break;
case Qt::Key_D: m_coverDisplay->scrollLyricsDown(); break;

In the file src/coverdisplay.h:
Search for that line:
void toggleLyrics();
And add those two lines just after:
void scrollLyricsUp();
void scrollLyricsDown();

In the file src/coverdisplay.h:
Search for that line:
void CoverDisplay::toggleLyrics()
And add those lines just _BEFORE_:
void CoverDisplay::scrollLyricsUp()
{
if (Settings::showLyrics() && m_lyrics)
kapp->postEvent(m_lyrics, new QKeyEvent(QEvent::KeyPress, Qt::Key_Up, 0, 0));
}
void CoverDisplay::scrollLyricsDown()
{
if (Settings::showLyrics() && m_lyrics)
kapp->postEvent(m_lyrics, new QKeyEvent(QEvent::KeyPress, Qt::Key_Down, 0, 0));
}

In the file src/fullscreen.h:
Search for that line:
"<tr><th>" + i18n("L:") + "</th><td>" + i18n("Show/hide lyrics") + "</td></tr>"
And add this lines just after:
"<tr><th>" + i18n("U/D:") + "</th><td>" + i18n("Scroll lyrics up & down") + "</td></tr>"

Then recompile and reinstall Kirocker Music Display.
Enjoy the U and D keys to scroll lyrics Up and Down, ready to map to your remote.

oh man you did a really good job on this one. the Beta 2 rocks big time. It looks really smooth and you edit "my" theme (kore and power sound) and the theme look a lot better. At the moment I'm writing a review and installation manual of the new OpenSUSE 10.3 release so this weer I can't test this app but after I'm done I will test it and make some new themes for Kirocker Beta2 :0

For all users that running OpenSUSE 10.3 You van install Beta2 with Yast.

Another way is that you do it as a screensaver, but not as default screensaver, if your music is playing, run the screensaver using dcop interfaces?then you have Lock option too?

and what about using KHotNewStuff to get themes?(if you want to do this, i think you should ask kde-looks people to open a new category for Kirocker, or you have to setup your own server for this?)

See my reply to emilsedgh above for the screensaver.
It's exactly that.

About KHotNewStuff, I will wait until it is ported to KDE 4, as KHotNewStuff changed a lot.
But yes, I hope I will use KHotNewStuff in KDE 4.

And for the categories list on kde-look.org, I will ask kde-look.org webmasters to do so.
But there are more and more little applications that have a few extnsions like this. So I'm not sure they will be willing to add a category for each single application.
My proposal is to add a global "Application Addons" category where people can add their own application.
I added a comment here:

now that we have Lyrics, only thing i want is providing it as a Screensaver, should just be a .dektop file.

The idea is simple, i want to show kirocker full-screen mode when i do not touch my computer after a few minutes...

Thanks!

I will do even better than that.
I will not set Kirocker Music Display as a screensaver.

Instead, there will be an option to automatically start it a few seconds before the screensaver when you are playing.
You are playing something? Kirocker Music Display will replace your screensaver.
You are not playing anothing? Your normal screensaver will start.

But what about if you have a password-protected screensaver?
Well, Kirocker Music Display will need this feature too.
And this is great, because if you use the full-screen display during parties, you don't want people mess your computer, so you want to lock down the computer to only Kirocker Music Display.
This lock mode will be also used if you have a password on your screensaver, and Kirocker Music Display replace your screensaver.

To quote Steve Jobs, "it's AM AZ ING" ;-) Isn't it?

The famous Tux vs. MSN Butterfly wallpaper, converted into a Kirocker theme. The background image was not made by me but unfortunately there is no way to tell who the original author is. The theme config is based on sunset bliss.

To stay in the music theme, here is a guitar theme, hey ;)

Oh, and there should be an option to change theme randomly.

I'm advancing slowly but surely on 4.0 Beta 2.

Now, shadows and frames are not proof-of-concept anymore, they are both configurable by each themes.

It still need some work, some debugging, and the frames really need a graphical editor, but here is a preliminary preview:

http://slaout.linux62.org/kirocker/kirocker-4.0-beta2-preview3.png
http://slaout.linux62.org/kirocker/kirocker-4.0-beta2-preview4.png

I've used the custom theme Kore and modified it with frames.

A little more wait, and you will be able to play with Beta 2... ;-)

Really nice little app, thanks a lot.

One very small request - I've placed Kirocker on a panel by itself, and I have the panel shrunk down to 20% width. What would be really nice is if I could shrink it to 1% and have the "Expand as required to fit contents" checkbox checked. I tried this and it ends up cutting off the text. Would this be possible/hard to fix within the constraints of KDE3, and if so, are you planning to make a Kirocker plasmoid? :-D

Thanks again for such a nifty tool.
