Description:

KPlayer is a KDE multimedia player.

With KPlayer you can easily play a wide variety of video and audio files and
streams using a rich and friendly interface compliant with KDE standards.

Features include
- video, audio and subtitle playback from file, URL, DVD, VCD,
audio CD, TV, DVB, etc., as well as KDE I/O Slaves;
- volume, contrast, brightness, hue and saturation controls;
- zooming, full screen and fixed aspect options;
- status and progress display and seeking;
- multimedia library to organize your media files and streams;
- configuration dialog and file specific options;
- KPart for integration with Konqueror, KMLDonkey, etc.

The new 0.7 version brings KPlayer into the KDE 4 age. It has been ported to KDE 4 APIs, including Solid. There are currently no plans to use Phonon, since MPlayer is the only backend KPlayer uses. Some polishing has been done, primarily to make KPlayer window resizing smoother. And as usual there have been many bug fixes and translation updates.

Debian packages are available thanks to Christian Marillat.
Set up the repository unless you already have it in your sources.list:

echo 'deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org unstable main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list

Update the package list and install MPlayer, KPlayer, libdvdcss and codecs if applicable.

apt-get update
apt-get install mplayer kplayer kplayer-doc libdvdcss w32codecs

Hello

Kplayer looks fine, but I miss two things:
1. Can I change subtitles font?
2. Can I change subtitles encoding?

It seems so far the only way to do this is by setting Additional Command Line Arguments on the Advanced page either in KPlayer Settings or in File Properties to something like:

-font Arial -subfont-encoding ISO-8859-7

Note that you cannot put spaces in the font name this way, but you can put the path to a font file instead. If you need a font with spaces in its name, then put it in your mplayer.conf.

Hi
I'm trying this app for the first time, and I think it's very interesting. Adding such a set of extra features to MPlayer is a great idea, but I think there are a few more very desirable (imho):
- Toolbars should be configurable, as "all" kde apps (add/remove buttons, change their icons,..)
- Sorting the playlist using any of the columns included should be possible
- Adding/removing columns at the playlist is also required
- Adding all media files from a selected directory to the playlist should be recursive (or not.. you decide at insert time)
- File information at playlist should be easy to see.. sometimes you can get confused with it (for example: "AAxBB VIDEO: xvid AUDIO: mp3")
- Related to this an extra column to show advanced information about the file could be added if it's possible to get this information from mplayer (bitrate, fps,..)
- The playlist should work in "double-click mode". Currently It's annoying to get a file played when you only want to set Its position (maybe move it up or down)
- If possible I would add also extra columns at playlist for setting the "category" of an entry (music video, anime video,.. of course the set of categories should be configurable) and even adding the user rate to each one (so you can decide which are your best files, and you can sort the playlist using this column if you want to have together your best videos)

Well, I hope you like it

Congrats for this great app :D

Regards

Ooops, a couple more:
- The currently played song at the playlist should be selected in a different way. Maybe using a different selection background color or by showing Its row bigger than the rest (this is the way it works at Amarok)
- So you could add a button for scrolling the playlist to the current playing file or do it automatically (I think the first option is better, even more if you are managing your playlist when there's a file change)

Regards :D

More and more:
- I should add an extra column to the playlist representing the file index (It only show its position and It's not editable.. I would be easier to find a song by remembering Its index, whithout having to search It manually by Its name or whatever you want)
- At "Preferences/Show status bar" I think there's a bug, because It should be "checked" when you enable It and doesn't seem to work in this way..
- The playlist editor should be automatically hideable (or not.. It should be configurable). If you want you can show it up, and before playing a file you could drop it down to get a bigger image without having to switch to fullscreen mode
- At status bar I should add an icon showing the current playing status (I'm talking about common play/pause icons)

Regards :)

Some changes:
- All I've written about "playlist" was really about the "playlist editor" (I hadn't noticed it, sorry..)
- For hidding the playlist editor you could do it automatically (as I've said before) or even better, having a hide button (a down arrow icon) (when you hide It you only can see a bar over the status bar representing the packaged editor and your hide button has been changed for a "show button", which shows an up arrow icon). So you should have the hide button instead of the close button (if you want to close It you always can use the keyboard shortcut or use the playlist menu)
- When playing mplayer in standalone mode if you press the "o" key you cycle between the modes of showing the file time (show the status bar when moving forward/backward, show current time and %, show current/full time, and don't show anything). At kplayer this option is disabled, and you only can set how it works "statically", going to the preferences menu.. why don't let it work as it is? if you press the "o" key you should cycle the show time mode

Soz for so much posts..

Regards :)

Hi there,

It's been a long time since I last came to kde-apps, so I missed your posts by more than a month, sorry.

Funny thing though, I've been working on many of the things you mention for the last year or so. If you could compile the current CVS and give it a try, you will see that many of your wishes have already come true. :) Playlist Editor has been replaced with a new feature called Multimedia Library, look in there for all the new stuff.

In the future, if you have more suggestions about KPlayer, please post them on the KPlayer user forum at SourceForge, so they land in my inbox right away, but are publicly visible at the same time. I really like your ideas, please keep them coming!

Thank you buddy, but I wondoer why rtsp:// and mms:// stuff do not get played with kplayer and embedding is also not supported by kplayer as with Kaffeine.

I wish:

1. support konqueror embedding (embedded media player)
2. play real media from konqueror from rtsp:// and mms:// protocol (of course with codecs installed.)

I use Slackware 10 + kde 3.3.2

Hi,

All of that is supported by KPlayer. Embedding in Konqueror and KMLDonkey has been supported since 0.4, and rtsp:, mms: and pnm: protocols since 0.5.

Have you installed from source or some kind of binary package?

You can look for a mms.protocol file under the global services directory, like /usr/share/services or similar. If it was installed correctly, it should have a line like exec=kplayer '%u'. Also make sure that there is no local mms.protocol under ~/.kde/share/services

For the embedding part, check for a kplayerpart.desktop file under the same global services directory, and also libkplayerpart.la and libkplayerpart.so files under the KDE lib directory, like /usr/lib/kde3 or similar. Of course you should also have KPlayer at the top of the list on the Embedding tab in File Associations for each MIME type you want it to play in Konqueror.

Please let me know what you get.

Thank you for using KPlayer!

Hi,
Thanks for the helpful hints.
I installed kplayer_0.6.3-1~getdeb1_i386.deb on my Kubuntu Gutsy system but cannot get the mms://wjr.onlinetech.net/wjr stream to play.
I edited the mmms.protocol file in /usr/share/services and changed the empty exec= entry to exec=kplayer '%u' and rebooted.
Still no luck.
There is a huge output that scrolls by when I do kplayer mms://wjr.onlinetech.net/wjr. Can you tell me what I should be looking for?
Thanks.

Why do you choose pornographic videos to present your software ? It's not good at all. Imagine that a father who uses KDE wants to show to her daughter ( or her wife ) the nice Kde applications and themes. They will be very disappointed.

Yes, you are obviously right. In fact I am planning an option like that in KPlayer 0.6. But 0.6 will take a few months to be complete and released.

For now you need to choose File/Open URL and type in vcd://1 or whatever is the track number you want to play. After that the entry will show up on your playlist as well as the Open Recent menu, in case you want to play a VCD/SVCD again.

I realy like kplayer, and the deb packages as well!
I'd like a kplayer command line option to select mplayer config file!
And the reaseon: when I watch a movie with subtitle, I add to mplayer the vop=expand=-1:-66:-1:0 option to have a black place for the subtitles.
But when the movie is in my language, than I hate that black area:)
So before kplayer I had two mplayer icon on my desktop, with the two options.

Fine thanks, and sorry for my bad enlish!

Hi,

You don't need any command line option. KPlayer is a KDE program, which means all functionality is available through the user interface!

The feature you are looking for is called File Properties.

First of all, remove any -vop options from mplayer.conf.

Open KPlayer and load the file you want to play with subtitles. Then go to the File menu and choose Properties. Choose Advanced on the left and put the -vop=expand option into the Additional Command Line Arguments field.

By the way, in recent versions of MPlayer the -vop option is now called -vf.

Please let me know if you get any more problems.
