KPlayer is a KDE multimedia player.
With KPlayer you can easily play a wide variety of video and audio files and
streams using a rich and friendly interface compliant with KDE standards.
Features include
- video, audio and subtitle playback from file, URL, DVD, VCD,
audio CD, TV, DVB, etc., as well as KDE I/O Slaves;
- volume, contrast, brightness, hue and saturation controls;
- zooming, full screen and fixed aspect options;
- status and progress display and seeking;
- multimedia library to organize your media files and streams;
- configuration dialog and file specific options;
- KPart for integration with Konqueror, KMLDonkey, etc.
The new 0.7 version brings KPlayer into the KDE 4 age. It has been ported to KDE 4 APIs, including Solid. There are currently no plans to use Phonon, since MPlayer is the only backend KPlayer uses. Some polishing has been done, primarily to make KPlayer window resizing smoother. And as usual there have been many bug fixes and translation updates.
Debian packages are available thanks to Christian Marillat.
Set up the repository unless you already have it in your sources.list:
echo 'deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org unstable main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list
Update the package list and install MPlayer, KPlayer, libdvdcss and codecs if applicable.
apt-get update
apt-get install mplayer kplayer kplayer-doc libdvdcss w32codecs

It would be a nice thing, when I musn't do that algorithm every time,when I use this player(frontend).
Yes,I know it's only a frontend, and in case I want to use command line, I would do better,if I use gmplyaer/mplayer simply. But at my computer gmplayer is full with bugs, and I like when all of programs have the look from kde!
Also that I would like to use in the desktop icons details: Exec:/usr/share../kplayer --conf=~/mplayer1.conf
Of coures it's not the most important thing:)
Thanks for the quick answer!

(-- is because the kde-apps.org :) of course itmeans >))
I made this in the kplayerprocess.cpp, @ line 571, and it puts a black rectangel, when a subtitle loaded!
It can be also a chekbox at kplayersettingssubtitle, and much more:)))
Thank for that good ui!!!

I may add the toolbar config feature in the next version, 0.6, but that won't be ready until next year, sometime in spring probably.
Can you tell me what is wrong with the contrast button?

I love Kplayer but it lacks:
1. System tray (like kaffeine, noatun, juk)
2. external playlist (the drop down list is weird)
3. Simplified Configuration/Settings, (I can't understand most of the options in the settings, those are too cryptic)
Above all KIO Slave support is just awesome. Thanks for such a nice player.
Eagerly waiting for next release with systray support and simplified settings. :)

If they were not useful, they wouldn't be there. I am in the process of adding tooltips and whats-this hints for every setting. Do you think this will help?
I will think about the systray thingy though. May have a 0.5.2 release in a month or two.

2. Most of all Settings lack ICONS :(.
3. File Association is not present in the Settings, I want to play all Audio and Video files with Kplayer!
Very Annoying
4. The message window: the error dialog just popups up. nobody like popups without 'Close' button and 'don't show this message again []' checkbox.
or better please show error message in a simplified manner in the 'Status' bar with Bold Red Color
like:
File not Found
instead of
displaying the whole Mplayer's message.
Thank you! I wish KPlayer becomes the Default Player in KDE.

They are now in the CVS. Check it out to see if they are any less confusing...
> 2. Most of all Settings lack ICONS :(.
That's because noone made them. I am not a graphic artist. So your best bet here is to contact the author of your favorite icon theme(s), let them know how much you like KPlayer :-) and very politely (but firmly :-) suggest to them the idea of making icons for KPlayer actions (like brightness, contrast, shuffle, open URL, whatever) as well as pages in the settings dialog.
> 3. File Association is not present in the Settings, I want to play all Audio and Video files with Kplayer!
Good idea. Could you please submit it here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=71710&atid=532185 so it does not get forgotten? Thanks!

You can submit this as well, but I will need to think about the best way to do this, as right now there is no good way to put a check box in the message log. Maybe make it an option in the right click menu? By the way, I am pretty sure message log does have a Close button. ;-)

my question why dont all of you sit together and make the-best-kde-media-player-ever??? ;)
join the efforts and standardize to one mediaplyer that all the distros can (and will) ship! i know that diversity is a big bonus of the open source world but i think something like the standard kde-media-player could (and should) be one application, including all the benefits of the kde-players mentioned above. would be more comprehensive, not only for newbies...
anyways kplayer is probably my favorite and has good chances of becoming th-best-player! just make the others join you ;)

got one problem: when playing a movie, it is started in an seperate mplayer-window. thats not supposed to be so, isn't it? i would like it to be in the kplayer moviewindow :)
or did i just miss a configuration option?
by the way i'm running kde 3.2.3 gcc 3.3.3 an qt 3.2.3 (i think so)
i'll give it a try with gcc 3.4 :)
by the way, a cool feature would be a systray-integration. i like that a lot like in kaffeine, but i like mplayer more than xine :)

I don't know which distribution you use, but normally the mplayer config reside in /etc/mplayer. Just remove or comment out the line from it and you should be fine.

Another possibility is that your MPlayer is using an odd video output like "-vo gl" or somesuch. By default KPlayer tells MPlayer to use "-vo xv", but if the XVideo extension is not loaded, that will fail and MPlayer will fall back on other outputs. Look in the message log to see what actually happens.
More information in the KPlayer Installation Micro-HOWTO:http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=23142&group_id=71710
and the Basic Configuration Micro-HOWTO:http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=23154&group_id=71710
I will think about the system tray thingy for 0.6. :-)

THis happens with the ATI Radeon drivers from ATI. It will always play in a separate window. Try xv.

I will try to add better DVD support in 0.6, but I will do my best to avoid cluttering the GUI with extra buttons.

I switched to kplayer and you can set it for auto. I find that it will play videos in the background that kmplayer wouldnt because of the mplayer bugs ... but this was resolved with the auto output setting and the fallback feature.
This player is AWESOME. Good job author!
