Classic icons for GNOME/MATE based on Windows 95.
This new version was developed for the MATE desktop, so more icons will be changed in MATE than in GNOME. This will be the last release in a while. It is still incomplete, but a large improvement over previous versions. Looks very good with the Classic95 and Tux-Overlay Matenu/Gnomenu themes (seen in the screenshot). The gtk theme in the screenshot is Xfce-Redmond with the Xfce engine commented out. I hope this update will be enjoyed, it was fun to put this together.

yes it works better now.
It works very well on gtk3/cinnamon too. The only remaining problem is the start menu.

Extract the archive with something like file-roller -> Rename the extracted file to classic95.tar -> Extract the classic95.tar to your icon themes folder.

how you see missing icons exist
probably simlinks help
from the default folder to these ones
or if you found the adecuates, those are the only needed for a good interface to imitate the old times

I'm currently working for an windows 7 theme for ubuntu 12.10.
I think a win95 like Desktop session could be difficult to run under newer linux versions. Perhaps you can use a modified cinnamon version or xfce.Mate or icewm aren't under a fast devellopment.
The icon theme itselfs runs under gtk3 too.
