KIO slave for iRiver iFP MP3 players
Various KDE Extensions
Score 64%
Description:

This is a KDE KIO slave for iRiver iFP MP3 players, so you can up- and download files to/from your iFP using KDE's Konqueror.

It is designed to work with the Manager version of the iRiver firmware as it uses the excellent tool ifp-line (http://ifp-driver.sourceforge.net).

To install the library untar the archive and follow the instructions in the
README file.

You mentioned that there are some limitations if you use the UMS firmware. I'm intending to buy a iRiver iFP and am really curious what those limitations are.

On the side note, your KIO slave is based on ifp-line. Is ifp-line a part of your tarball or is it a dependancy?

I just got an iFP-780 the other day, and to make things easier, I decided to port kio_ifp to Joe Roback's libiriver - http://www.roback.cc/projects/iRiver/ Here's a tarball: http://www.acm.jhu.edu/~trisk/kio_ifp-0.12.1.tar.gz The new version also supports renaming on the player (useful for getting around restrictions on downloading *.ogg or *.mp3, for example).

The site listed for version 0.12 is down is thers another site somewhere? Also does this require the UMS firmware?

Try the link again, the server should be stable now. UMS firmware makes the player a USB storage device and doesn't need this software or any special drivers (but has a few limitations). This is for the default "Managed" firmware.

Im probably going to buy an IFP iRiver any day now, just making sure that it's totally compitable with Linux.

Thanks again for developing this app!

This program deserves a 95% at least! I was just about to start writing a kio-slave (even though I have no experience in KDE programming) for my wife's iRiver so that she didn't have to use mc, but this totally saved the day!

I do have one question though, and it is probably the obvious answer I fear. Downloading of mp3s is disabled by the device? If so, does using the UMS firmware get around this problem?

Thank you!

I haven't used the UMS firmware yet but as far as I know with the UMS firmware you can download all file types from your iRiver to your PC.

That's correct - it's possible to download mp3-files from the iRiver with the UMS-firmware.
