how do i set this up to react with pidgin i know how to change the icon to one of them but i have not figured out how to make them change when i get an IM or go away ect..

You have to install the Pidgin Awn Plugin, and enable it from Pigdin.
You can download it from http://wiki.awn-project.org/Plugins:Pidgin
However, if you want the last version that include all the states, you have to download the plugin from the last revision of Awn-Extras https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~awn-core/awn/trunk (I'd give you the exact link but for some reason I can't access to the Launchpad servers).

From there, download all the four files. The README file provides instructions on how to compile the plugin.
