mp3gain indeed modifies the audio file but it stores correction data into the frames and can thereby undo all the changes.
You can test it yourself by running:
md5sum <file>
mp3gain -k -a <file>
mp3gain -u <file>
mp3gain -s d <file>
md5sum <file>

But thanks to you I found a related bug. Removing the changes made by mp3gain doesn't work with soundkonverter, so please don't use it until the next version.

Also choosing between APE and ID3 tags is on my todo list.

Why do not you create your project on http://www.transifex.net/ ?
It is very convenient for an interpreter for you.

Now I translate the program into a separate project here http://www.transifex.net/projects/p/soundKonverter-ru/

looks interesting. the reason i'm not that thrilled is that i was very disappointed when i used launchpad/rosetta.
i tried to register at transifex.net but the registration form is still half russian (or so). :(
but i'll keep an eye on it.

Thank You so much for that app. At last KDE has a decent native sound converter! KDE purists! We don't have to resort to gnome applications anymore! Let us rejoice :)

THANK YOU THANK YOU

Hey,

I have a bunch of FLAC ripped CDs which I want to convert to MP3 to be able to use it with an MP3-Player. This works perfectly fine beside one little thing: The FLACs contain Album Cover in the Tags which are not converted. Is there an option also to copy the Album Cover Tags? Would be really great!

Thank you very much,
Felix

Hi HessiJames, and THANKS for your application ! So far, you're the only one who implemented per-tag album gain calculation instead of per-directory ! This is a killer feature for people like me who like their music organised by artist even when on compilations. :-)

However, I've noticed the following behaviour when soundKonverter encounters a filename with "*" in it :

Imagine track 1 to track 20 of the same compilation but different artists in several directories.

Let's say track 6 has a "*" in it's filename.

soundKonverter will calculate album gain :
- for track 1 to 5 altogether
- for track 6 alone
- for tracks 7 to 20 altogether

What can be noticed :
- filenames with "*" are treated isolatedly
- filenames with "*" make soundKonverter treat files before and after them as separate albums

One temporary workaround is of course to avoid "*" in filenames.

I've also noticed that tracks in different frequency are treated as different albums, even when sharing the same album tag.

Lastly, the ULTIMATE killer feature would be the ability to calculate album-gain even if file formats (for the same album) are different ! :-D
Just raving : I reckon your time is better spent coding more frequently useful stuff. ;-)

1. yeah, the '*' character is used as a wildcard in the bash, i'll have a look at that.

2. maybe i'll make it this way in the future. but the current way is more reliable. the replay gain backend takes all files from an album and writes the tags itself. this wouldn't be possible at the moment because of a bug in taglib. i posted a patch to fix that bug so it might be possible in the future.
so currently all files need to be of the same format and same sampling rate.

Hi HessiJames, thanks for your reply and sorry for my late answer.

Would it be possible to add an option to choose between ID3v2 and APE tags (or both) when appying ReplayGain on MP3 files ?

Per default, mp3gain (at least since v1.5.2) writes APE tags (= mp3gain -s a), but I'm using Rockbox on my audio player which only reads ID3v2 tags (= mp3gain -s i).

choosing between id3v2 and ape is a good idea, i'll target that for soundkonverter 1.1.

regarding your problem with "*" characters, could you please be more specific. what backends do you use?
i couldn't reproduce it.

I use metaflac for FLAC, vorbisgain for Ogg Vorbis, and mp3gain for MP3. I don't use any other file formats.

Does that help ?

Hi, great app. My encoding to mp3 was failing, but SK just displayed failed in the window without much explanation and the main log didn't show any error. By reading this site I have discovered the other log files (may something to add to GUI or readme) and there I found error

Unknown encoder 'libmp3lame'

The best way how to solve this problem is described in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1385688
and in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1117283

Once I followed these and installed the necessary codecs it all worked.

Thank you for your feedback.
I'll keep this in mind. The problem is that there are a lot of things that can go wrong and my time is very limited. So I won't be able to handle everything.
But it seems that the log viewer dialog should really be redesigned.

In settings I activated all checkboxes, to remember my previous settings, but my settings are not restored at restart:

I choosed in detail-view "enter bitrate" with "192kbps". but always quality "middle" is selected, so I have modify select box every time.

Thank you for your report, you have a very valid point. Unfortunately it would not be a small bug fix but rather a redesign of the way settings are saved.
So I'll have to delay that for the next version.
Until then, you can save your settings as a custom profile, this should be restored correctly.

First, thank you very much for your app, it is so useful for me !

Unfortunately, I'm experimenting some probems with it in Kubuntu 10.10. When I try to rip CDs, multiple files are always ripped together. Because of this problem, it can take me some hours to only extract the files of one CD !
When I rip all files manually one by one, I don't have any problem, but it's not a very pleasant soution.

I have tried to change soundKonverter settings, by setting the number of files to covert at once at 1, but it didn't change anything. I have also tried to change the CD ripper (even if I don't believe this would be the solution), but I wasn't able to select an other CD ripper in soundKonverter settings.

So, do you have an idea of what the problem is, and how I could solve it ?

Thank you in advance for your help !

normally soundkonverter should only rip one track per device. could you please try to rip some tracks again and send me the log files of lets say two tracks (see below).
also, which version of soundkonverter are you using and how many files are being ripped simultaneously?

creating log files:
1. Try to convert the file.
2. Then open the "Log Viewer" by clicking on "Conversion" in the menu bar and selecting "View logs...".
... The Log Viewer will now open in a new window.
3. By default the Log Viewer will show the log of the soundKonverter application, sending me this log won't hurt.
4. But the more important log is the log for the file you just tried to convert in step 1. To see that log, click on the combo box (drop down box) at the top of the Log Viewer window and select the file.
5. To save a log to a file, click on the "Save to file..." button on the bottom of the Log Viewer.
