Description:

KoverArtist is a program for the fast creation of covers for
cd/dvd cases and boxes. The main idea behind it is to be able
to create decent looking covers with some mouseclicks.

The project started from my need for some decent covers for the
films I record from television and then often burn on dvd for
archiving.

With series I usually start with one or two dvds, and add more as
more episodes are available. So the program - KoverArtist - had
to be flexible enough to handle that. This also requires changing
covers on the fly to use cases that can house more discs.

I want to create some case templates. I noticed that the included templates are xml files. I want to create some cases that provide for two sided front covers (folded sheet).

Could you please explain the XML scheme so that I can do this?

I would be happy to share any case templates I create.

Alternatively, is there a way to left or right align an image instead of centering?

Sorry that my answer is late, I have lots of work at the moment.

There will be a version 0.4.2 within the next hours that contains a FILE_FORMATS file. There the case file format is described.

Aligning the images is not possible at the moment. I think to implement it useful one might need some scaling options too. However, I have put it on the TODO list.

I'm trying to use KoverArtist (version 0.3.2 from the repos) in Kubuntu, and I'm running into problems. When I try to open a saved project file, I get the error message "Unknown case:" or "Unknown case: cd-standard". If I click "Continue", the project file will open but without any cover art; only the song titles are preserved.

Perhaps related, I also noted that the "Case" pull-down menu is non-functional. Selecting this menu after opening the program causes the cd template to disappear, and I have found it impossible to recover it without restarting the program.

Has anyone else encountered this behavior or found a workaround? Would installing the latest version from rpm work? If the latter, please let me know which rpm version worked for you, as there are several KoverArtist rpm's available for SUSE, and I'm not sure which would work best with Kubuntu.

Download the source from this site.
Extract *.koac from the src/cases directory of the tarball, and copy or move them into /usr/share/apps/koverartist/cases/
Restart koverartist.
Report the bug to the packager.

Is there a way to ONLY have side text show up and not show up on the cover? I have a really nice cover that I'd like to not have text on. However, I do want text on the side. From what I can tell, the Title and Sub are tied in to the front and sides. Am I missing something?

There is currently no option to hide the front cover title. What you can do is to make the font as small as possible and try if you can hide the title within the image.

I will see what it takes to make such an option.

Hmm...I'll try that and see what it looks like. I may just end up putting the text there with The Gimp. Anyway, I guess I will make a feature request to allow the separation of the front and side text. Thanks again for the reply and keep up the great work. KoverArtist is the type of app that was really needed.

I already implemented it in 0.4.1, which you can download right here :-)

Downloaded, installed and tested. Works like a charm. You rock!

Ok so, here's my next feature request and then I'm done. I would like the ability to add entire paragraphs to the "contents" area on the back cover (think of a description field). I have several audio dramas that don't necessarily have track information as much as a description of the play itself.

Thanks for the getting to the side text so quickly.

I'm trying hard to shift gentoo-portage from the old (unmaintained since 09-21-2003)
kover to koverartist. I hope in one-two months I'll be past the "burocratics" steps.

Hi. What about image rotation? And btw, all my DVD covers are in one image like this [ || ], so I think it would be great to add not only image rotation, but also support for these all-in-one DVD covers.

I will rather not add image manipulation. Simply because I want to keep the program easy to use, and it has already many options.

And for the image thingy - there is this option to use the foreground image for both sides. That wraps it around as you requested.

Hi,

Like the program but:
is there any way of setting the printer resolution to something better than 100dpi? The lousy print quality has been a problem in all the Linux cover printing programs I have seen so far...

Report

It is a problem of the underlying Qt library. You can change the resolution to something other than screen resolution when drawing for printing.

But then the used fonts are a little different. The result is that the text effects do not match the text anymore.

One solution would be to make the text effects, upscale them to e.g. 300dpi, and then add the background image in this resolution. That should look much better, but it is a bit tricky to implement.

Nevertheless this is one of the things I would like to implement in the future.

Yes, I did look into this for one of the programs some time ago and made some changes, but never really had the time to fix everything it broke. The program was not that well written, with a lot of constants defined that depended on a default resolution of 75dpi :-(.

Would it be possible to render everything to a pixmap of say 600 dpi and scale that for printing and display separately?

If you make a 12x12cm image with Qt and write text into it, the result is different if you make it at 90dpi or at 200dpi and downscale it. Because of the fonts that are used.

It should be technically possible, but Qt's font selection algorithm does its own magic and I found no way to tell him: use the same font as in 90dpi but upscale it.

So what I have to do is to render the effects at screen resolution, upscale the effects to printer resolution, merge them with the background image, and print the resulting image. The (foreground) text is handled by the printer itself and is always at printer resoultion (even now).

If I render the effects at printer resoultion then Qt uses the wrong fonts and the result does not properly align with the foreground text.

Besides that, printing a 600dpi image is resource intensive -- thats probably why the GIMP people made their own printing drivers.
