Description:

Audex is an audio grabber tool for CD-ROM drives based on KDE 4.

Audex creates profiles for LAME, OGG Vorbis (oggenc), FLAC, MP4/M4A/AAC (faac) and RIFF WAVE. Please install your favorite encoder.
Of course for WAVE no external encoder is needed!
Beyond you can define custom profile, which means, that audex works together with commmand line encoders in general.

You can define extensive filename schemes. Please take a look at the documentation on the Audex webpage to see what's possible.

Some features are:
* Extracting with CDDA Paranoia. So you have quite perfect audio quality.
* Extracting and encoding run parallel.
* Extensive filename schemes.
* Filename editing with local and remote CDDB/FreeDB database.
* Metadata correction tools like capitalize etc.
* Multi-profile ripping (with one commandline-encoder per profile).
* Fetch covers from the internet and store them in the database.
* Create playlists, cover and template-based-info files in target directory.
* Creates ripping and encoding protocols.
* Transfer files with KDE KIO-Slaves.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: As LAME still can't handle unicode characters correct, Audex uses since version 0.73 eyeD3 for tagging mp3 files, if available. It is highly recommended to install eye3D on your system if you create mp3 files with Audex! **

Same here on Kubuntu 10.04.
After clicking on "OK" in the "Create New Profile"-Dialogue Audex crashes.
I have Audex 0.72 beta 1 on KDE 4.4.2 installed.

I have multiple optical drives on my machine - one rips faster, so I usually use it, but the other works better when a disk is scratched. It would be nice if the drive selection dropdown was accessible on the main screen rather than buried in the configuration dialog. :)

With audex 0.80 it will be (intuitively) possible to rip even simultaneously from several cd drives connected to your system.

Hooray! Hopefully I'll figure out how to make this thing alert me when new releases are published...

Nice KDE application!

I systematically rip to both flac and mp3 encodings. May I suggest keeping the ripped .wav files in the tmp directory until the CD is ejected (or when audex exits). This way, changing profiles need not re-rip the CD and can encode (more rapidly) from the existing .wav files.

I am just thinking about what's the best way to implement a double encode feature.
Some people have asked for that.
But not before Audex 0.81.

Hello, is there possible to set the replaygain tag when encoding ?
Thanks

Hej,

I'm sorry, but this is by now only possible with a custom command line pattern.
Best way is to create a small bash script you can use in your custom profile definition.

But Audex 0.8 will have an "clickable" option for replay gain tags.

Audex 0.72b1 regularly gives me bogous warnings about ripping being too slow albeit there are not problems. As the progress bar shows, the CD rip is running at 8x speed.

I've seen this with two different USB portable CD+DVD/burner drives, one brand-new LG drive, and another year-old Samsung drive.

Is there a way to switch the bogus warning off?

Hej,

ok, I'll keep that in mind. At the moment I'm quite busy, because I'm doing a complete rework on audex base.

And I'm going to test with external usb drives, of course.

Thanks, Marco

What I really really really miss in Audex is the option to save the files to a one letter directory based on the initals of the artist's name. I have organized my albums in directories A B C etc., subdirectory artist's name, subdirectory album. In kaudiocreator I can choose to save to mydir/artistsinital/artistsname/album. Please add this option in Audex too!

okay, that's no problem to implement this in Audex.

I'm just working on version 0.80 with full cue sheet support. I really hope I can release it before christmas.
But if you are familar with compiling just check out the most recent version from Audex from KDE playground next week. I will have implemented this feature then.
If you need more help, just write me a message here.

Thank you very much for this suggestion!

Hej igen,

okay, I've just implemented and commited this in my working pause ;-)

So you can use a variable like this

${artist substr="true" substr_pos="0" substr_length="1"}

to fetch the first letter of the artists' name.

The resulting string that contains substr_length characters of the artists name, starting at the specified position substr_pos.

Of course you can combine this with the uppercase="true" option, in order to get the first letter upcased.

${artist substr="true" substr_pos="0" substr_length="1" uppercase="true"}

will give you e.g. "M" for the artist "meat loaf".

I haven't tested this yet, but I'm quite sure, that it works.

I have 0.72 beta1.

${artist substr="true" substr_pos="0" substr_length="1" uppercase="true"}/$artist/$title/$artist - ${trackno length="2" fillchar="0"} - $ttitle.$suffix

gives

MEAT LOAF/Meat Loaf/Bat Out Of Hell III/Meat Loaf - 02 - Blind As A Bat.ogg

instead of

M/Meat Loaf/Bat Out Of Hell III/Meat Loaf - 02 - Blind As A Bat.ogg

Or will it be in the next version?

On my root partition there are 4.2 GiB space left but Audex shows me a warning that there are only less than 800 MiB in /tmp/kde-me. It's no symlink on another partition, there really are 4.2 GiB... How das Audex calculate the free space in /tmp?

Report

C

ok, thanks for the hint. I will check this.

Audex just uses in case of Linux the "normal" operating system function (statvfs) to get the free size.

Report

same situation over here too: quite some space on / containing /tmp and ~ (home). Audex often warns about not enough space being available ... but there's enough disk space still free, and I don't want to rip all the music so it should really suffice. ;)

Audex seems to have a problem with writing German umlauts to ID3 tags. It does show the track and album titles correctly with umlauts and saves the filenames correctly with umlauts, but the ID3 tags are written wrong, e.g. "Naturklänge Vögel und Wasser" instead of "Naturkl

Hi,

this is a known problem with lame and utf-8. Maybe I find a way to workaround this issue (force using iso-8859-x for lame).

Thank you, best regards, Marco

This bug is still active: I am using Audex 0.72 and Lame 3.98.2 on Kubuntu 10.4 and the mp3 tags are completely unusable as soon as there are non-ASCII characters in it.

It would be best if it was possible to choose the code page for the id3 tags independently from the code page that's used by the system for the file names. (Like "Grip" does it.)

You said that maybe lame could be forced to use another character set. How do you do this and does it really help?

Hi all.
First of all tnx for you great sw :)
I have just a request. Did I missed somewhere or there is not a way to show how to organize the path/name of the ripped file?
I think it would be great to have it, in a way how it is implemented in amarok or kaudiocreator.

My 2 cents

What do you mean with "a way to show how to organize the path/name"?

I think with the profiles you have a full control over the way how path/name are being organized.
