Luckybackup, along with krusader & konqueror, make for perfect backups. I've not lost a bit of data in years.

Thanks laddie!

Thanks for mentioning about the Arch pkgbuild :)

I will add that link together with some puppy pets at the download list as soon as v0.4.5 is released...

Just got luckyBackup, and I created a backup on ext usb Freecom disk. All went well but when later syncing I forgot to plug in the ext disk resulting in system freeze. I booted on another partition and found that the root directory was 100%. I then found that a Freecom directory in /media with all the files. I deleted this dir and was able to reboot again.

Is there any way of avoiding this in future.

Thanks great program

Hi Leon,

Quote:Is there any way of avoiding this in future.

Yes. This is probably the first feature of LB, back to the times when it was a simple bash script :)

Please have a look at the relevant section of the manual (declared data check):
http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/manual.html#startDeclaredDataCheck
(It's not much to read, don't worry)

to make a long story sort:
1. Take a quick look for "non-green" tasks just before you hit that run button.
2. Have the skip-critical box checked if you're scheduling.

Hope I helped

Yep thanks however for us non experts an automatic check to see if destination is open would be nice. If not then a little pop up to warn us and it would not continue. I have seen another exact same issue on another forum, so it does happen. When my problem did happen some one that doesn't have a clue would not be able to boot. Its critical for us techlessees.

All the best

I see what you mean.

That's how it actually was some time ago, but after some users suggestions, most of the warning dialogs were replaced by other kind of visual feedback.

But since it has happened again, as you mention, and its results are quite serious an extra warning has to be used.
How about a dialog that would demand the user's confirmation to go on after he/she hits the run button (if there are "critical" tasks) ?

Report

Thanks luckyb for quick response. Yes need some warning/deterrent e.g 'Is your usb mounted?'. I do see the little symbols to the left of the backup name, however you have to click this to see the Critical warning or whatever. The symbol does change according to status. The Critical warning 'Destination directory /media/Freecom is empty or does not exist. This task will not be skipped. Directory will be created if it doesn't exist and filled with new backup data' I see that you have to create directory if not existing but if Freecom or whatever is not mounted a dir will be created in /media and filled resulting in root directory being 100% filled. Can a check be done for mounted media which would be best solution and if not mounted action not allowed until it is? I can't see anyone doing a backup to the /media directory on root so if the directory is not there (not mounted) then it should not be allowed to create one there.

ok, I just spent an hour writing about mount theories and scenarios.
Don't worry, I "ctrl+A & delete" them :D

Here's the verdict:
Your suggestion is very good but an ideal scenario for various reasons.

(I'm talking about checking whether a specific partition is mounted at a specific point)

By all means I will adapt and implement it :)

But I cannot just forbid the profile to run.
There always going to be users that would like to by-pass the safety checks for a reason.

I will make sure though, that a clear WARNING together with a clear user's confirmation is displayed.

For Solstice, my brother gave me a top end WD 2TB drive. Between Krusader (for compression directly to a directory) and sometimes I use peazip as well and luckbackup for the final transfer to the external backup drive..

I did a 1.1 TB backup in 6 hrs.

Not all the files where compressed, the DVD videos for example, where not.

Thank you to luckybackup, krusader and peazip. You guys rock!

Cheers and happy holidays!

Great program!

Just one question:

Could you equate the possibility of LuckyBack to have the possibility of shutting down the machine after the backup is finished?

It can be useful if you're doing large sync's/backups to remote sites with a slow connection... And in this case you can leave the desktop computer unattended...

Report

C

Hi Francisco
:)

It is quite often that users would like to execute various stuff before or after a task has finished.

That is why there is an "also execute" feature available:
http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/manual.html#OperationAdvancedAlsoExecute
You can provide an "also execute" -> after command at the very last task, so that your system will shutdown as soon as the profile finishes.

Have a look at the man pages of the commands shutdown, poweroff and halt to use the one that suits your needs ;)

Hi, thanks for the reply.

You're right, a post-backup task can be associated to backup task that can shutdown the computer.

But I'm not sure if this is adequate as the backup might end and I'm still working at the computer...

A better idea is like Ktorrent implements, if leaving the computer, just press the Shutdown button, and the computer will shutdown after all downloads finished.

Report

C

A couple of days ago and before you posted the last message, I used Ktorrent and wanted my pc to shutdown as soon as some download reached 100%.
Then I noticed that really handy "configure shutdown" button.

Despite the fact that you are absolutely right, I consider this a karmic coincidence and added your request at the project's official to-do list:
http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/todo.html

This is a Linux application, and a very nice one - thank you for your efforts.

But why are you using some Windows terminology in the dialogs?

Sync directory A:
Sync directory B:

Backup operations deal with source and destination

I would rather see:

Sync source:
Sync destination:

The use of drive letters is a Windows convention.

This is of course, just a cosmetic issue, but...

Report

C

luckyb

Hi snowhog,

the dir A & dir B terminology is actually used at "sync" tasks, not backup ones, where source & destination are used indeed !!

Syncing is a 2 way operation.
At the first stage, the 1st dir is used as source and the 2nd as a destination.
At the 2nd stage, it's the other way round ;)

That is why, the terminology changes when the task refers to syncing directories.

If you still believe this should be changed, let me know ;)

Am I wrong or did LB have compression abilities. I remember using it to create compressed backups.

If I'm wrong, I'd like to put in a request for compression capabilities.

Thanks again for the great app!

Hi Kate,

for once more thank you for your kind words :)

Unfortunately LB never did have a direct support for compressed backups.

Your request is already in the official app's to-do list:
http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/todo.html
(...but its priority is a bit low)

Alternatively, and if it suits your needs, you can always add a handmade "also execute -> after" command to create a compressed tarball out of the created backup

Report

BorgQueen

No need to thank me, you deserve it. I'm glad to hear that compression is in the works, even if its a low priority. If possible add a test compressed file function to test the newly created backups. One should always test compressed files.

There are many advantages to a tar.bz2(etc) backup. The container protects files and it takes up less space.

I'll pay about with LB more, see if I can't get it to do what I want in the mean time.

Thanks again!

When I try to use the handbook [F1], I cannot use any links. Using them makes the whole textbrowser go blank. I receive the error "QTextBrowser: No document for manual/index.html#overview" when using a shell.
I had the same issue with one of my own applications. However, using an absolute path fixed the problem. I tried putting an QApplication::applicationDirPath().append("/") in front of helpUrl at luckyBackup, links worked fine then.

Great App, btw.
