Description:

skim is an input method platform based upon scim-lib under *NIX systems (including GNU/Linux and FreeBSD) systems optimized for KDE. It provides a GUI panel (named scim-panel-kde), a KConfig config module and SetupUIs for itself and scim-lib. It also has its own plugin systems which support on-demand loadable actions.

(skim has been incorporated in most distros, so you may want to check your distros repository first)

1. I'll look into that

2. cool

3. could not the first toolbar be in the systray ? or a kicker applet ? or something not floating ?

3. there is another icon in systray to indicate the current input method of skim. If you feel that floating toolbar is annoying, you can just disable it in configure dialog. However, I do not think you want to do that: without that toolbar, you can not toggle any options available to the current input method you are using.

its what I meant....

why not those options could be selectable from the systray/kicker applet ?

like in osx and windows

osx = all options for all input method merged
windows = two icons

ok, I now understand what are you asking.

yes, that's possible. I will implement something like the windows way (I do not have access to mac os, unfortunately) in future releases.

FYI: I checked that, under windows, most of the installed chinese input methods display the floating "toolbar" and only one of them give you the opinion to minimize into the system tray.

thanks for this idea.

the main window is reduced in skim 1.2.2. How do you think about it?

I'm using Japanese, its where I got the idea from, its sits in the systray.

I installed scim 1.0.1 + scim-hangul 0.1.2
+ scim-tables-ko 0.4.3
and then compiled skim 1.0.2.

In non-KDE applications and in Konsole skim works ok. But in for example Kate and Kmail the first Hangul character I type is shown as a dotted square, as if the proper font is missing. When I type the second character so that it becomes a composite Hangul character, it gets normal.
For example from the following text, the first character is shown incorrect in Kate, the second (composite) ok:
ㅇ 아

Does somebody now how to solve this?

Solved. I just installed *all* the Korean fonts that are in the Suse distrib.

It seems that's a signature issue.

Hi,

I know that's a great program. I was waiting for it to leave windoz. But I encounter a big problem.

I download the last version from hier (it's the same situation if I download it from freedesktop.orgà.

If I try to unpack it with KPackage it never opened to be able to click the installation button. Then I can't install it with by this way.

If I click with the left mouse button it wille be opened in my konqueror where I see two buttons. The first is the 'install package with yast' and the other is 'Use directory as source with yast'. This last button is disabled. But the first is enable. Then I click on this only one solution. After what Yast is opened. Then I insert the skim name and it appeared at the right side of yast to be selected for installation. I do it but after that I receive an error message telling that it can find it on the media=media:file not found). That's due to the fact it try to find it on the first cd-rom. I even set the first cd-rom in my drive to see if it wasn't a bug of yast which will bypass the cd-rom after see that it doesn't be there and then will see to the real directory. Bull shit.

Then I tried the more classical rpm (manual) command : rpm -Uvh skim-1.0.0-1suse.i586.rpm
and then I also receive an error message :
error: skim-1.0.0-1suse.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: BAD, key ID cfc588cb

error: skim-1.0.0-1suse.i586.rpm cannot be installed

Then I want to know what must I do to install it on my suse 9.1.

Thanks a lot and have a good night.

You must have refered to the old (abandoned) scim homepage

please download latest scim-lib (version 1.0.0) from
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/scim/scim-1.0.0.tar.gz?download

The new SCIM project homepage is
http://scim.freedesktop.org

if you know Chinese/Japanese/Korean then you will have an idea.

Did you hear about uim, IIIMF? SCIM is a kind of such library and framework, while skim is (roughly) a KDE frontend.

Or ever did read nasty software patents. Patent attorneys talk like this. And this is probably not the influence of Japanese Patent extremism.
