I think that also it would be nice if you could say click and hold down home, and have its contents pop up on the desktop in a group, or maybe pop up down the screen in a tree form (the functionality should be limited to something closer to a menu than a file manager) - Apr 25 2004

I had some improvments in another theme I was using on my system, and some other modified cystal icons, and I just sorta threw it all in slick before I released it not realising ide done some damange (like removing the konq icon with the spider), and putting crystal folders in was something I overlooked. Anywho I suppose I better fix it up some time :) - Jul 03 2003

In the mood to hack this theme a bit more? Add some gradients (either hoz or vertical or both) then it would be very spiff :) - Dec 13 2002

Firstly, It is part of many KDE using distros as I was contacted by the KDE team and asked if it could be added.
If you still think its unoriginal then perhaps I can show you elements of the ~50mb .xcf original of this image. aswell as a dozen other incarnations that came before the final.
So before you start rubbishing someone for "taking credit for artwork" just because you saw it somewhere else, why dont you check if my name was on it there before you start spreading bullshit. Get a clue - Dec 10 2002

Various Stuff by jvoorhis 39 comments
The X developers, especially Keith Packard know what you all want. KDE developers know what you want. And steps have been taken (Xrender) to create this. However 'eye candy' as much as I like it, is superficial, trivial and imho should be low priority considering some of the far more important work that needs to be done.
I think that you shouldnt try and annoy the developers with a lobby/petition. It would just put more pressure on them and they do such an awesome job now. Also both projects already have bug/wishlists as long as the bible.
Whatever the final solution is, I think Gnome and KDE should work together on this common need. Its important to avoid duplication of work/effort, which im sure will be considerable, and far more than some of you think. - Jul 03 2002

Its a KDE 3 problem. 2 isnt effected (not with kicker anyway). I also compile from source, but I cant see what we could be doing wrong.
So far I can offer a very half assed solution, which is to run the slick install script (in the slick directory) as, 'install.sh overwrite'
NOTE: this WILL OVERWRITE most of the default hicolor theme, its not a very nice solution at all. but it fixes kicker and a number of other apps which wont theme (partially kate, kcm applets run from outside kcontrol, konqueror when embedding sometimes.)

Yes it is a bzip2 file with .gz
It was supposed to be a .gz file but in my tiredness last night I must have slipped with the switches. In future it will be bzip2 as it does knock 100k off the file size. - Mar 21 2002

To install...
1. Open the icon prefs by clicking on:
"KDE Go icon" > Preferences > Look&feel > icons
2. Click on the little folder that is directly to the left of the "Install new theme" button.
3. Select Slick_1.1.tar.gz from the file selector & press Ok.
4. Then! Click the "Install new theme" button.
5. Choose Slick from the list of icon themes.
The other thing is you shouldnt be using KDE as root.
You could easily move or delete an important system folder while browsing around, rendering your system unuseable.
Shady WWW sites also have the potential to do massive damage to your system.. Instead of just being able to murder your personal files, they could potentially murder your whole system!, and any others you might have installed.
For normal day to day linux use you should create a 'normal' user account.. This should have been done during installation. If not your redhat book will surely tell you how to do it. - Feb 18 2002

I liked the drawers aswell, I think they are a much better metaphor. However, I just couldnt make a decent 16x16 drawer, they looked terrible.
The other reason is it wasnt very easy to place images on top of them, (for the content themed drawers), there just wasnt enough room to work with.
The drawers (and the original folders aswell) are still included in the theme though, Theres alot of choice for the 'folder' in this theme.
By selecting "Edit Filetype" from the context menu you can choose from about 4 different 'folder' styles. :) - Feb 16 2002

An icon set is an icon set, use it or not, but dont winge like a little girl because you like another one better, iKons is great, this is a theme site, none of this stuff has to conform to anything, and i'll call it what I fucking like, got that?
Man why the fuck would you do anything for anyone with assholes like you around.
and btw "Stupid strict fascist style" is pretty damn stupid, remember what your talking about here.. Icons.

The lights are the easy part and didnt take that long at all. I did them by making a big yellow sqaure for one building face, and then cut it into a grid using the straight line/erase tool. This is done on its own layer, so then the color can be altered using mainly the gradient tool, then to make them glow, a rough yellow 50% translucency blob with the air brush over every square.
