Plasma 4 Extensions by jaegerschnitzel 1069 comments

Searching the web a bit showed up, that some people could solve their plasmoid troubles on 4.2.1 with

sed -i ā€˜/^lastsize=/dā€™ ~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc

or even removing .kde/share/config/plasma*

Probably this might help you, too. - Mar 10 2009

Hm, ok. Please try to re-compile it.

Which Qt version do you use?
I can reproduce crashes with plasmoidviewer on 4.2.1 (which didn't exist for same cwp version running plasmoidviewer on 4.2.0). But I upgraded Qt to 4.5 at the same time. - Mar 10 2009

I can't really reproduce this behaviour, but you should make sure to re-compile cwp if you upgrade KDE or Qt.

I will split the data-engine from the applet (so data engine is available for possible other weather plasmoids, too), which is a cleaner way.
This might improve stability. - Mar 10 2009

Thanks for the comment on Mandriva kde development packages.

I don't think this is my fault.

At least, this explains, why I could not reproduce it: I recompile it very often during development. And I don't update KDE too often ;-) - Mar 09 2009

In principle this is possible.
I'm thinking about adding a dialog where you could select from those satellite image urls.
I just don't really like the idea of hard-coding urls into the plasmoid, as they might change from time to time.

Parsing is a list of processes (tr, sed, awk, head, tail, ...), which should run only for a very, very short time.
Obviously, on your system, thoses processes don't return.

Plasma 4 Extensions by jaegerschnitzel 1069 comments

It's not very difficult:
install inkscape, and open an existing yaWP theme.
The Background parts are ignored, but the weather icons are important.
Import your png files, and name them accordingly (Object ID "sunny" and object name "#sunny" for example).

Before renaming the imported png file, you should remove the original icon, as two objects with same ids are not allowed.

Don't forget to import the pngs completely instead of embedding just a path to them. - Feb 26 2009

Plasma 4 Extensions by jaegerschnitzel 1069 comments

That's why you can choose the icons you want to use: You can choose the ones you like. I personally prefer kde ones, although they're lacking a "wind icon", for example.

KDE's weather data engine is quite useless, as it only has very restricted information. Not many locations supported, and no longer forecast, for example.

The systray version will have tooltip and enlarged view, when clicked on it soon.

Tooltips on the desktop won't be supported, as this is nonsense, I think.

Updating my "data engine", so it can be used by other programs is not planned, as it isn't spearated clearly enough from the main program. - Feb 26 2009
Customizable Weather Plasmoid (CWP)

Plasma 4 Extensions by jaegerschnitzel 1069 comments

Actually, the corner which can be uses depends on the position of the icon: if it's on the right side of your systray, it's the upper left corner, if it's on the left side it's the upper right one. - Feb 26 2009
Customizable Weather Plasmoid (CWP)

Plasma 4 Extensions by jaegerschnitzel 1069 comments

1) can be changed easily, probably I'll change it, so it will eat up as much space as it can get. So in winter font size will be bigger than in winter :-)

2) as the non-systray mode is very similar to systray mode, popups might appear on non-systray mode, too. I hate it, when my desktop shows popup information everywhere.
But I'll see what I can do.

3) What do you mean by that? Should information be left away? You can start by omitting the icon description text (look at configuration dialog)...
I don't really get your point.

4) yahoo doesn't make too much sense as it only displays weather.com information in a stripped way (stripped to 5 days), as far as I can see.
I simply don't have the time at the moment to write xml files for every possible weather provider.
Probably, if they provide more information than other providers do.
I'd be glad if you could write your own xml file (and share it).
A good point to start with is (as usual) the README file, and of course some other xml file as a template.
And if you don't get any further, just send me an email.

Hint: Before starting writing the xml file, check the following things:

Does the provider provide enough information? A seven day forecast with high/low temperature, date, icon and icon description; current temperature, current weather icon, current weather icon description, wind direction and speed, etc.?

Is the location-specifig URL encoded in a way, so http://xyz...../<zip>... can be used with different zip values?

And very important: Is information provided inside the html file, not as flash or unparsable java-script? - Feb 25 2009
Customizable Weather Plasmoid (CWP)

Plasma 4 Extensions by jaegerschnitzel 1069 comments

That's not easy.
I see two options:

a) automatically resize font size, so the
text will fit in one or two lines

b) allow user to manually set font sizes for each small text element

Both have significant disadvantages:

a) text sizes will be different for all text elements, it will look terrible!

b) would be very difficult to customize, let's assume i'd have to add 10 or more spin boxes allowing this.

Solution:
What I could do quite easily is to allow more than two lines to be shown, up to a complete forecast rectangle.

Plasma 4 Extensions by jaegerschnitzel 1069 comments

Transparency settings have no effect in systray mode, as stated in README file.
Reason: KDE is responsible for drawing the Popup window, and it's not easy to overwrite this function.
Resizing the popup window works perfectly fine on my gentoo system and a Mandriva 2009.1 system.
Just click on the systray icon, the popup window will be shown, and can be resized by clicking on its corner and simply resizing it...
Clicking only on an edge of the window doesn't resize it, this must be a KDE feature.
It also remembers size setting after plasma or KDE restart.

Thanks. In the beginning I thought it would be difficult to implement, but it isn't.

Of course this option must be handled with care, no-one will stop you to paste a link to latest opensuse distribution iso into the "custom image" url field.
And then it's downloading (storing it into RAM)...

But I guess, those people who do such things deserve some punishment like some GB RAM filled with an ISO file :-) - Feb 20 2009

I can understand what you mean, but I don't think I'll implement it.
Reasons:
