I have an emerald version of this, actually - but of course it doesn't pick up GTK color, so it just comes in Blue.

It's easy enough to change the color, so if you want it, just let me know. - Apr 21 2007
Yeah, there will be a couple of new colors in the next release. Right now, they'll probably be "Carbon", which is black, "Tungsten", which is a pale greyish, and an as-yet-unnamed pale blue/grey color. - Mar 26 2007
It shouldn't be any slower than any other murrine-based theme. I do use the pixmap engine once, but only to draw the background for gnome-panel. Several other themes do this as well.

The metacity theme shouldn't be doing more than a dozen drawing operations for any given window state, and most of those don't even do alpha. I doubt that's causing the problem.

On my computer at least, I don't see any issues with regards to speed. If others here have seen a problem with it that you don't see in other murrine themes, by all means, let me know. - Mar 26 2007
I've corrected the glitch you described; shaded windows now look much better in Metacity.

The artifacts you saw aren't there anymore, and a "shadow" gradient has been added to the bottom of the shaded titlebar. - Mar 25 2007
I'm using .51, and haven't tested it on earlier versions.

I'll make a note of that on the next update. - Mar 23 2007
Ah. It appears that Heliodor doesn't 100% match Metacity behaviour, then. I was using Heliodor, so I didn't see that.

I'll correct that at some point this weekend. - Mar 23 2007
I don't get a grey line at the bottom when I shade the window, focused or unfocused, but I was planning on removing the white line and lower bevel from shaded windows - I'll do that sometime in the next few days. - Mar 23 2007

I modified your port to bring it closer to the original metacity.

Also, I made the inactive frame slightly transparent.

You can't fix it in the GTK theme, but you can add the following to your Firefox userChrome.css file to fix it:

menubar > menu {
color: white !important;

menubar > menu[_moz-menuactive="true"] {
color: white !important;

menubar > menu[_moz-menuactive="true"][open="true"] {
color: black !important;

I'm not sure if I'd like this really, but apart from the multi-colored Gnome menu at the top, most of this is basically doable right now.

There will be things that don't look quite right - for example, windows with multiple toolbars might look strange - but the basic look could be done. - Jan 08 2006

I always planned to make a lighter version of it; I just got busy with other stuff.

Now that the semester is over, I'll try to get the lighter versions done.

Sorry about the wait :) - Dec 13 2005
Firefox can be tweaked extensively by changing your UserChrome.css and UserContent.css files - but that may be a bit more than you want to do.

There are extensions to make it easier, like: - Aug 16 2005
The font is actually light blue in the screenshot as well; jpeg compression messed it up, I guess.

The font color is controlled in the gtkrc file in the Smoked Glass theme directory (usually in ~/.themes/Smoked Glass/).

To make it white, you can open this file, go down to about line 93, and replace:

text[whatever] = "#9dbed0"

text[whatever] = "#ffffff"

That should make it white. You'll have to save and reload the theme to see the change. - Aug 16 2005
I doubt many people who actually view the screenshots would agree with you.

Really, aside from the fact that they're both based on a glass look, I don't see much in common at all - color scheme is completely different, my widgets are nothing like Microsoft's, and I certainly wasn't trying to imitate Aero.

Really, while there are some very cool things about Aero Glass from a technical perspective, I personally find it to be very inconsistent, and overall find their glass effects only really make it hard to focus on text - it's definitely not a style I'd imitate. And I'm speaking from experience; I'm an MSDN member and I have the beta of Vista installed on another PC. - Aug 02 2005
Yes, actually. After I'm completely done with this version, I'm planning on a releasing several color variants.

Three will be dark like this, but with a different color tint. The rest will be based on a light version of this theme. - Aug 01 2005
Doh, I see. Non-focused shaded windows are wrong. I'll fix that tonight.

Thanks again. - Jul 31 2005
Weird; shaded windows look fine to me - can you post a screenshot of what you mean?

Thanks about the weird color - I'll fix that. Not sure how it got by me. - Jul 31 2005
The strange prelight and some of the other weirdness is corrected now, and I've got a metacity theme included.

I wasn't sure how metacity themes works to be honest, so I thumbed through your Noir metacity theme to figure it out. Good theme, btw. - Jul 31 2005
It's still very early; more prelights will come as I go through and figure out where they're needed. Right now, I think they only really occur on buttons and spinners.

On my machine, Firefox looks okay, but I'm aware of some of the font color strangeness, and will be attempting to correct it as much as I can.

I'll be going through and adjusting quite a few of the colors (both font and background) later tonight - really, I just wanted to get something out tonight, to let people know it was real.

Thanks for the comments and the icon suggestions! - Jul 31 2005
This isn't just a "screenshot theme" - I've already got most of it completely done, and I'll be releasing the GTK theme today. Probably in just a few hours.

The first release probably won't handle side-tabs on notebook entries incredibly well, but that'll be it as far as I know.

Already, Firefox, Gimp, and Nautilus look exactly as they do in the screenshot above. I haven't seen any visual issues other than the ones you just can't get around, like the Zoom percentage in Nautilus not having a background graphic.

I like a lot of the work you've done here; I'd appreciate it if you'd give me the chance to show this isn't just a mockup with nothing behind it. It'll only be a few hours, anyway. - Jul 30 2005
I'll definitely make it freely modifyable, but I'd like to prevent it from being distributed for a fee by anyone but me. I'm still looking for a license. It's not a big deal; I'll do GPL if I can't find a different one. - Jul 30 2005
A person on another forum said the same thing. I may rework them, but I'm focusing more on the GTK theme right now. - Jul 30 2005
After the initial version is finished, I'll release it tinted in more straight blue, red, and gold flavors. I just want to get this one done first. - Jul 30 2005
Some bits of the border at the top may look like it's part of the menu, but it's actually part of the metacity theme, and will be there even without a menu.Menus in other locations still look okay, though I'll admit they don't look as good as they do at the top of the window.

I was very careful with color choice after failing in my original attempt to port the Gonx theme mockups to GTK (the ones here:

I'm still tweaking it a bit, but I think it'll look good in most cases. The only think I'm having a real problem with now is deciding how to do side-tabs. - Jul 29 2005

Thanks for pointing me to that thread. Should help a bit, at least.

By the way, I've grabbed the pixmap source in the current release of GTK, and it does appear to be within my abilities to fix it up a bit, but I'm not really sure if that's the best route - a new combined pixmap+svg and line/gradient drawing engine might be a better solution than a just a tweaked up pixmap theme.

Just a thought, especially with cairo hardware support eventually coming down the line - most of the stuff in my last theme could have been done with a few simple drawing operations that way - without images. - Aug 17 2005
I will attempt to correct this as much as I can, but there's only so much I can do with this GTK engine.

I will be making a lighter version of this theme (gold colored with black text), which shouldn't have problems like this. Probably be out in a week or two, after I get a few other things done. - Aug 16 2005

The theme actually came out darker than I meant - I didn't notice it until I viewed it on a few different monitors.

I'm going to be redoing most of the graphics in a slightly more vibrant color, as well as making the borders of buttons 2 pixels thinner all around. The button part of the combobox has been cleaned up, and the scrollbars are now completely different.

I'll probably get released this weekend - Friday or Saturday. - Aug 09 2005

Oh, grow up.

There are certain things that the gnome panel has issues with - for one, actual support of translucency in applets and buttons is really hit and miss.

The fact that you can't really do a visual copy in gnome-panel of the Windows taskbar pretty much illustrates the limitations on it's own.

Don't knock someone for solving a problem, even if it's not a something you'd use. - Jul 30 2005

In the version you have up right now, the top corners of unfocused windows are missing a black dot at 2,2 and the equivalent on the right side.

I fixed it by adding two lines to the "round_bevel_unfocused" section, about line 357.

I added:
<line color="#000000" x1="2" y1="2" x2="2" y2="2"/>
<line color="#000000" x1="width-3" y1="2" x2="width-3" y2="2"/>

just before the </draw_ops> line. Fixed it right up. - Jul 03 2005

Sounds great - are you going to try to get those introduced to CVS, or are you just going to leave it as a patch?

No biggie, either way, just curious - it's a change that should have been made by the time the 3.x releases started. - Sep 03 2003
It's certainly possible to do a texture like this on any kicker - the problem is that a lot of applets (the clock, taskbar, system tray) don't allow for background textures.

That's why I'm doing the clock applet, and also one of the reasons I switched to using a windowlist instead of a taskbar.

I'll release as soon as I get some problems fixed; right now there are serious repainting issues with the style, and the window border doesn't handle shading windows the way I want it to. As I said in the post above, I have school starting tomorrow, but a release of at least the kwin decoration and the clock / mp3 applets should be possible next weekend. The style may take longer, it just depends on how much free time I have. - Sep 02 2003
Currently, I have it working with XMMS, but it wouldn't be too hard to get it working with MPlayer. Any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

My school semester starts tomorrow, so while I'll work on this when I can, I wouldn't expect to see an actual release in at least the next week...but it's possible. - Sep 02 2003
Okay, I'll get a shot of the widgets up sometime today, then; I'd love to hear what you guys think. I'm going out to a movie right now, but It'll go up when I get back.

Also, I should let you guys know that this is my first KDE theme (actually, first experience with qt at all), so I wouldn't expect too many extra effects, at least at first. I may add some glows and whatnot as I get more familiar with things, and I'll try to make all of that optional or customizable. - Sep 01 2003
I'm cleaning up the tabs right now, but I'll try to put up a screenshot later tonight or tomorrow with the full widget set. - Sep 01 2003
Thanks! It's good to have some feedback.
