Root Actions Servicemenu

Dolphin Service Menus by kubicle 227 comments

Thanks for the suggestion :)

Personally I use a different color scheme for 'root' apps as a reminder, but I realize that not everyone does, so I'll look into adding a 'root reminder' into the next non-translation release.

I'll probably implement it in the perl-script for the strings to be translatable and effecting all apps started with the menu (not just konqueror and kate)

Something like "Kate in Root Mode", "Konqueror as Root" or "KWrite Opened as Root", I'll give it some thought. - Oct 08 2007

Yes there seem to be several issues in dolphin (d3lphin).
1. ServiceTypes=all/all doesn't seem to work at all on dolphin, changing it to ServiceTypes=all/allfiles,inode/directory in rootactionsall.desktop should bring back the majority of the actions.
2. Dolphin doesn't support _SEPARATOR_s, removing them makes it a bit cleaner.
3. Dolphin doesn't merge the menus, showing two menus instead...the only solution I can think of for this is to merge the menus in a single .desktop file

So it isn't impossible to get it to work with dolphin, but it needs a bit of work...Maybe I should make dolphin version into the package as well.

In 1.95, the current permissions are enabled by default in the 'change permissions' dialog. If multiple items are selected, the permissions common to all chosen items are enabled. - Aug 11 2007

Thanks again.

I'll look into the permission thing. The 'only' problem I can think of is how to handle multiple files with different permissions...I'll see what I can do. - Aug 10 2007

Added 'Change Permissions' menu item/dialog in version 1.94_Beta.

To give all would be translators a break, I'm not planning to add any more features (or translatable strings) to version 2.0 ;)

It'll just be bugfixes (hopefully there aren't any) and adding translations until 2.0. - Aug 09 2007

Thanks, could you also translate the dialog message strings in rootactions-servicemenu.pl for a complete translation? :) - Aug 09 2007

Thank you for the translation and the bug report, I'll fix it in the next version. :)

I'll probably drop the paths altogether, using just the appname should have the same result as using which to get the path.

I haven't come across a complete reference for servicemenus (which doesn't mean there isn't one somewhere)

Here's a short tutorial that you may find useful (it's a place to start anyway):
http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Creating_Konqueror_Service_Menus

Of course one good way to learn is to examine existing servicemenus. - Jul 05 2007

I edited the menu to use current users active user:group instead of static 1000:1000, this should negate point #2, and also edited the name to not emphasize kubuntu. :P - Jul 04 2007

Thanks for the comment. :)

You're quite correct...there isn't much that is kubuntu specific in this menu, it should work with most other distributions as well (at least with a tiny bit of tinkering).

I chose to emphasize it was designed for kubuntu, because:

1. You might need to edit your user accounts or /etc/sudoers to enable the use of sudo for the menu (I'm still under the impression that on most debian based systems sudo is not enabled by default on any user accounts)

2. Some distributions don't have 1000:1000 as the default user:group (which is used in the menu)

3. Some distributions already have similar tools/menus/launchers to easily perform the tasks in the menu.

4. Laziness -- None of the points really prevent using this on other distributions, but I wanted to avoid getting a lot of mail about "why doesn't it work on my XXXX distribution" due to points 1 and 2. - Jul 04 2007
Just to relieve the 'pressure':

I edited the source code for myself, and changed the values to ones that felt better on my setup/resolution.

So no need to add the feature 'just for me', only add it if you feel it'll improve the functionality/usability of the style :) - Oct 30 2006
You're the developer, it's your call. :)

There is a setting in ~/.kde/share/config/kickerrc that controls the height of the kmenu entries independently (MenuEntryHeight=).

And depending on that setting, some padding can be useful even on kmenu (of course if it makes one's kmenu huge, the padding could be set to 0, which could be the default)

Not trying to pressure you (much ;) ), but if you already implemented it, there shouldn't be much harm in including it (as the setting could easily be set to low values if needed?)

But as I said, in the end it's your call.

Very nice, this is what I call responsivess to feedback :)

Keep up the great work, and thanks. - Oct 26 2006
First of all, thanks for the great work on the theme, switched to QTCurve some time ago from Lipstik and I'm very happy with it :)

Just have one suggestion (to improve usability):

There are currently two options for menu items, 'normal' and 'Thinner menu items'.

Even the 'normal' menu items are a bit too close to one another causing accidental wrong menu-clicks on higher resolutions.

Would it be possible to include an option for 'bolder' menu items or even an option to set a customizable pixel-amount padding between menu items (which is available on some styles, like Lipstik I used before)

Just a suggestion, feel free to ignore ;) - Oct 25 2006

Icon Sub-Sets by kubicle 12 comments

Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried spheres first, but they weren't distinguishable enough (looked too much like raindrops on smaller sizes), but I created an icon with sort of 'ice cubes' that I put up as 'screenshot3'...so you can download the image and save it as hail.png if you like it.

I'll include the new hail icon in 1.2 version, but I wish to touch up a few icons for that version as well. :) - Jun 05 2006

Thanks, I tried to make them identifiable even in smaller sizes. There are many gorgeous icon sets available, but most were too detailed for my small panel :)

As for the 'hail', if you know of a better symbol for it, let me know.

Hail is 'icy rain' or 'pellet rain'...and I decided to mark it with two raindrops and one snowflake (that isn't entirely accurate, but distinguishes it from sleet, aka 'wet snow', which is depicted with two snowflakes and one raindrop)...but as I said, if you can come up with a better symbol for it, I'd be happy to edit the current one or add an alternative for it. - May 31 2006

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by motyR 383 comments

Thanks for your great work on deKorator :)

I noticed strange behaviour with the sticky button, when you have different images for 'Sticky' and 'StickyDown', I'll try to describe it:

1. Open a window
2. Focus another window so the window you just opened becomes inactive
3. The 'Sticky' button changes to 'StickyDown' in the inactive window.
4. If you click the sticky button twice this behaviour is corrected.

I tried it with two themes, has anyone else run into this?

Also a request, is it possible to add a button image for spacers in future releases?

Best Regards,
Kubicle
