Currently it is a toolbar, but in the long run I am planning to change that and make it reside in the status bar instead. Obviously this will save up a lot of real estate.

As to the question of making it an option, I think it can only be either a toolbar or a status bar extension, and the latter seems preferred, so it probably won't stay in toolbar form.

There's currently no schedule for this change, though. - May 28 2006

The database is downloaded at startup if you're in Offline mode, which is the default.
You can change the Running Mode to Online and see if that works. - Apr 12 2006

As far as I know, it is not currently possible for a Konqueror extension to change the color of the URL bar at all.

If it were posible, then such a feature would be very useful indeed. - Apr 12 2006
