ALI - KMenu - Suggestion

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by zammi 9 comments

... because it doesn't make sense. People (me for sure) don't expect scrollviews in a menu. A menu is a list of actions that you can execute by clicking on them. This isn't really a menu but more a menuified floating panel. I think it is a bad idea to add widgets (textboxes, scrollviews, ...) to menus other then labels like today. How would you navigate through this with the keyboard? People know when you click on a menu, it goes away. This would not always be possible with other widgets then labels (click to give focus to the textbox, click to drag the scrollbar, ...)

In short, I think this would be confusing and would decrease usability. - Jun 22 2005
Katapult

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by Zoombie 44 comments

I'm running kde 3.2 and can't compile katapult because you use a method (KConfigBase::readListEntry(const char * pKey, const QStringList & aDefault, char sep = ',')) and a class (KActionSelecter) (and possibly others) that where introduced in the 3.3 api, so your application depends on kde 3.3, not 3.2 as this page says. - Feb 24 2005

A few days ago, I was thinking of creating something like QuickSilver too! What a coincidence :-) Your app looks really great, I'm gonna try it out tonight! This is really a big help if you don't want your fingers to leave the keyboard.

Thanks! - Feb 24 2005

I think that having pop-up frames over a menu is not very inuitive. People do not expect it. A good user friendly interface also means behaving like people expect, and doing that in every application in a consistent manner.

I like the idea of the screenshots though, perhaps only in the io-slave? - Jan 25 2005

The top bar is a kicker panel with (from left to right) the quick browser special button, the menu applet, the systray applet and the clock applet.

For the menu applet to work, you first have to enable the menu bar in the desktop preferences -> behavior. Choose Mac OS style. The menu bar wlll appear on top of the kicker panel, but when you add the menu applet it will disappear. - Jul 29 2004

It doesn't (yet), bootsplash doesn't support themable progressbars, or not in this way. I have sent an e-mail to the bootsplash maintainer if this was planned, no anwser so far... If you just want this image with the regular bootsplash progressbar, you indeed have to patch your kernel. For more information go to http://www.bootsplash.org . - May 27 2003
