I guess I could do the transparent thing -- I've done it with other similar wallpapers. How about a transparent checkerboard? Also, I recently did a wallpaper similar to this one that you can use on your 1680x1050 display:

I took too long uploading it and got logged out of the site. I clicked the back button hoping my entry was still there, but the form was cleared and I had to start over. I guess I just rushed right past the 'Section' list. I caught the error this morning in my RSS feed list. It's fixed now. - Aug 03 2007

You didn't follow the file naming convention:

"NAMES: for the exact names deKorator expect to find please have a look at the images names in the default-theme, note that every theme should end up with the word "-theme" as in default-theme, and should contain all the folders residing inside the default-theme(deco, buttons, masks), otherwise it wont be recognize as a deKorator theme."

Pleae let me know when you fix it.

No. I did it in Bryce, in Windows. I started with a 1600x1200 .bmp image ('premium' quality rendering) and resized it to 1024x768 in the gimp. I also desaturated it, added a translucent radial gradient layer to darken around the edges and used color balance to give it a bluish tint. I tried Blender a while ago and didn't like it. I'm gonna reinstall it with yum and give it another try. - Feb 05 2005

I haven't been able to find the "-dev package" (for qt-mt). I checked and it's not in my apt/yum repositories. A google search didn't find anything useful. Any idea where I might find it? - Oct 11 2004
I'm using Fedora Core 2 with KDE 3.2.2. I get the following error message when I run 'configure':

hecking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.2) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

According to 'locate qt-mt', I have

which seems to be ">= Qt 3.2".

Any help would be appreciated. - Oct 01 2004

Do I need another library? Any help would be appreciated. - Sep 29 2004

most of the icons in the screenshot are from the set called 'Zenith' here at It's not an icon set that you can install, though. You have to select an icon for each application manually.

The last time I checked, 'Zenith' was the second highest rated icon set. Go to the icon section and click on the 'highest rated' tab. - Aug 30 2004

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the wallpapers. I'll try to keep visibility in mind on future works. One reason I darken the edges is to help icons stand out.

My distro of choice is Fedora Core, but I used SUSE to create screenshot #2. In the shot I noticed that the text is black with a white background. I wonder if I can get this effect in Fedora Core..... - Aug 15 2004

On the screenshot for this wallpaper, there are 3 karamba (superkaramba) themes.

In the upper right corner is one called 'Borealis':

In the upper right left corner is 'Liquid Weather Plus':

And the one on the bottom is called 'CleanBar' and is in the 'examples' subdirectory of superkaramba. - Jul 26 2004

.....doesn't work on my laptop with display set at 1680 x 1050. It gets cut off on the right, in the middle of the clock. Also, it falls about 50 pixels short of hitting the bottom of the screen (it covers my kicker icons). At 1600 x 1200 cleanbar worked fine, but at that resolution, everything else is distorted (anything round looks like an egg). I tried changing the default for resX and resY in the script, but those values are probably replaced with auto-detected values.

Now that I finally got the correct resolution working I can no longer use the cleanbar theme. Any assistance you can give to help me get it working again would be appreciated. It gives my display a nice, modern look. - Jul 14 2004

...since I upgraded to Fedora Core 2, KDE 3.2.2. The theme is there, but it's not visible. When I right+click on the area where the invisible theme is, the menu comes up, but 'Configure Theme' is grayed out and disabled.

I thought this might be a problem with SuperKaramba, but I'm using one of the example applications that came with it (CleanBar) and it's working fine.

Any assistance getting LW++ to work would be appreciated. - Jun 15 2004

Bryce has a bit of a learning curve, but not as much as linux software such as Blender. Once you know how to use it, it doesn't take very long to create scenes like this. Over time, you can accumulate objects (tables, chairs, glass blocks, etc.) and then simply arrange them different way. Once you've got some objects, it's as easy as moving furniture. - May 17 2004
Bryce 5, by Corel - May 17 2004
I rendered this scene quite some time ago, using Corel's Bryce 5. I think the original image was too colorful to be suitable as a wallpaper, so I used gimp to 'desaturate' (convert to gray-scale, sort of), and then I used color-balance to add a blue/cyan tint. Finally, I wanted the left edge to be dark, to improve the visibility of the icons, so I overlaid a radial gradient layer. I've been applying these techniques to some of my old 3D images - and people seem to enjoy them, so I may do a few more. Here are some others: - May 17 2004

Depending on the wallpaper, you can make your kicker appear to be transparent. Start with a screenshot with the desired wallpaper. Open it in gimp or your favorite image editor and cut a slice from next to the kicker, the same height as the kicker. In gimp, select the slice, press [Ctrl+C] to copy it to the clipboard, and then right-click and select 'paste as new' from the menu. Name it, save it, use it as the background image in your kicker.

Alot of my wallpaper screenshots use this effect. I'm still using KDE 3.1 at home until Fedora Core 2 (stable) is released. - May 15 2004

I added the word 'Updated' in red and white after the title. See it? ;-)

I sometimes like to have one of my more popular previous works accompany my new work. I don't think I do this more than once or twice a week. Given the number of works I've posted, many of which have been downloaded thousands of times, I think I'm entitled to this -- as long as I don't abuse the privilege. I could make minor changes, but then everyone who downloaded previously might have to download again.

I think it might be a good idea that every time your work is downloaded 1,000 times, it automatically gets posted to the first page with the label 'Featured', or '2,000 Downloads'. - Mar 04 2004

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran the gimp auto-level on the file and re-uploaded. There's numerous things you can do in the gimp to make this pic more desktop-friendly. I generally like to drain all the colors out with 'desaturate' and then apply a bluish tint with 'color balance'. Playing around, I made one version of this photo that turned the sky sort of a dark pinkish orange. - Mar 01 2004
