See, that's what I'm talking about: use what works for you.

Right now I'm using kde 3.5 for my main desk, but I'm using Emerald with CompizFusion, and AWN. I use OS X at work and have found that Exposé and the Dock are way more intuitive than merely a taskbar and virtual desktops. And the Desktop Cube in Compiz is way more handy than I thought it would be!

I may go your route soon, though, although I don forsee turning my desktop into an OSX-ish thing at all. Compiz and AWN still have a few rough edges to work out, and I may eventually tire of them, and AWN has some real WTF moments at times (like, why does every window need a dock icon??? why not one icon per app?) and Compiz does some bizarre (though rare) things like defocusing the foreground window at random on my machine. Having said all that, it's nice to have some modern features on my favorite desktop. :-)

Hope you continue to enjoy your *n?x desktop experience! - Oct 13 2007

That's Thunar:

http://thunar.xfce.org/index.html

It's possible, but not ultra-easy yet, to replace Nautilus with Thunar.

http://assente.altervista.org/it/use_thunar_as_default_gnome_file_manager/

The script introduced there uses system() instead of exec() for some reason. Also, it's not very robust. I keep meaning to take a stab at rewriting it. - Sep 16 2006

That was sort of the point, I suppose. One of the big complaints about KDE from outside the slavering KDE-zealot ranks is that default KDE is ugly. I don't think that default GNOME is lovely, but it's at least a usable system out of the box without a ghastly, gaudy theme. I'm simply pointing out that KDE could also look simple, have a fast, unobtrusive widget set, and do so without being completely hideous. - Apr 05 2004

I'm beginning to think that Tim Brown is really trolling. I mean, look at it this way: when someone posts a pic of a "babe," or some equally non-KDE image, you might see a mild rebuke. But when Tim Brown posts a picture (I admit it, they look terrible) we get all the bible-burning "your God is dead" jackasses coming out of the woodwork making royal asses of themselves posting unfunny parodies like this one, or backgrounds with Stalin, or what have you.

I have a mild amount of belief, and believe me, when you bash someone who's allegedly Christian you're just egging them on--part of the Christian belief system tells them (us, if I believe in it, I suppose) that they're going to get treated just the way you're doing. If Tim's the real deal, you're just encouraging him. If he's not, you're just encouraging him to post more troll material. Either way, if you want Tim to go away, stop being horse's asses--it's that simple.

It's amazing to see otherwise intelligent people engage in stupid behavior over a difference in opinion. - Jan 22 2004

Not bad for an LCARS background; perhaps a tad busy, but otherwise okay. If I were you, I'd consider applying a gradient to entire sections. If you look at The Next Generation shots, LCARS displays are usually flat in color, and when the displays are the painted prints (instead of composited) you usually see lighting go from darker to lighter due to uneven lighting Occasionally you'll see animated displays done by an old technique using polarized sheets of plastic IIRC.

Again, nice, though not necessarily my cup of tea. :-D I'd prefer something more along the lines of the Star Trek TOS cast movies LCARS displays, but that's just my own personal taste. - Jan 09 2004

I have trouble with the dark-grey patches . . . do you have problems with this with other GTK+ themes? I do.

Maybe it's time to take a second look at the Legacy style...you're right, that's pretty annoying...theming both toolkits is an exercise in quiet frustration, as the Legacy and Pixmap engines, despite claims to the contrary, don't work the same. Sure, Legacy can work with GTK+ themes, but that doesn't mean the "emulation" is perfect. And I don't think it needs to be; just more complete.

What I really wish, and I mean, I really wish, is that there were some sort of cross-toolkit theming engines other than the GTK+ pixmap engine emulation support in Legacy. Legacy is nice, but incomplete. And besides, Qt is Not GTK+(TM).

I really wish I had an answer. Sorry for babbling so much. :-) - Dec 04 2001
