Well, for those of you who get configure errors about the files being from the future, you may want to run a make -f Makefile.cvs before running configure. That seemed to fix it. - Jan 01 2005

Hey, here is a proposal. Any chance this could be SVG so that way it could scale with different window sizes more gracefully? Obviously, you still need CSS and HTML holding the page together. I guess I don't know how well SVG integrates into web pages yet, since I have never seen it in practice. - Jan 01 2005

The graphic that greets you when launching kcontrol is kde 2ish. We need something Crystal-like. I like your design because it plays off of the default splash screen. But maybe like splash screens, this could be something themeable in the future, and for instance a Nuvola-style help template and kcontrol graphic could be made. - Dec 25 2004
Gaim - Flash Notify

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by cratos 6 comments

I am not a fan of Kopete's contact list model. I'd rather have everything separated on an account basis. Plus, the last time I tried Kopete it had a lot of trouble downloading my contact lists from the server properly and you could not delete contacts locally after a change was made at the server level. Maybe these issues have been resolved, but I'm still not a fan of some of the integration features in Kopete. I wish there was a way to use more traditional styles. - Nov 05 2004

Because that stuff is all faked transparency from what I understand. This is based on REAL transparency that can move when you drag windows, unlike the menu effects since KDE 3.1. - Sep 12 2004

I'm not sure on the i18n package since I don't install it. But it wouldn't uninstall dependencies. It would only uninstall the programs you don't want, front ends to Kparts or whatever, not the underlying libraries. I mean, overall you probably aren't looking at that much more disk space after you get rid of unwanted apps. I am seeing it more from a clean up of the path and less clutter in the KMenu perspective. - Sep 08 2004

Developers Apps by slesa 35 comments

No, I would think it could be much simpler than that. For instance, the 'configure' script is the only one that you need because it retains information like the prefix of the directory where you installed the software. Also, 'make uninstall' will uninstall software. Perhaps by keeping a few key files from the build directory and then a GUI can handle the running of these scripts if you want to uninstall something. Of course it would be much more complicated than that if you wanted to remove one program from a KDE package that was already installed. It would be much easier to exclude the program from compilation instead of uninstalling it after the package has been 'make install'-ed. - Sep 08 2004

Developers Apps by slesa 35 comments

What KDE needs is a GUI configurator like xconfig is for the Linux kernel. One advantage Gnome has over KDE is that you don't have to install a bunch of unwanted programs if you don't want to. This is a problem for Gnome in that installation is a pain in the butt. However, KDE installs a bunch of programs that are useless or unworthy of my hard disk space. Now with KolourPaint, why do I need KPaint? Why do I need KEdit if I have KWrite and Kate? And even so, I might opt to not have some of these programs all together. In other words, we need a little utility that will let you check off programs you want to build in the various packages. I think KDE has it down when it comes to bundling the distribution over fewer packages. However, let's have some more flexibility during the compilation process. I also think it would be neat to make a control center module that would let you uninstall programs from the KDE distribution, but that is a different issue entirely. - Sep 07 2004

I'm not familiar with the book, but it could be biased. Don't take whatever you read to heart, that is just naive. The author could have cherry picked information and told you what he wanted you to believe. I'm not saying that's the case, but all the research I've done indicates that the only recounts that went Gore's way were ones he had his people handling. - Aug 26 2004

The Favicon should be a piece of paper if there isn't one for a particular web site. The directory icon doesn't look right. Great work! I've abandoned my Firebird Crystal theme after porting it to Firefox as others are leading the way with better Firefox themes. How does this work? Because I can't tell the difference between this and Qt. Does it use Qt for the drawing? Can you do this for Thunderbird (at least the Plastik part)? - Mar 20 2004

Copy the KMenu icon and rename it menuk-mdk.png, this will overwrite the stupid star. Also, you can ditch the stupid blue background for the KMenu in the kicker preferences.

I'm with you, and I hate it when Mandrake changes the defaults, especially stuff like this that is so obvious. One of the first things I do when I install it is ditch all of their branding. It takes about three to four hours to fully get rid of, but it's doable. - Mar 15 2004

I have submitted the theme to them per your request. I was holding off until I could finish every last aspect of this theme before submitting it to texturizer, but now is good enough. That's Ximian's Industrial Theme for GTK2. Remember that Firebird is available in both GTK+ and GTK2 with XFT.

So, I just went to and got the Ximian Artwork 0.2.26 package for Mandrake, but you can get and compile the theme engine from if you use something else. I'm not sure on the availability of binary packages for your particular distribution. - Dec 28 2003

Almost Industrial

KDE 3 Color Schemes by hakker21 2 comments

I've been looking for an Industrial knockoff for KDE for quite some time. This one still is just an adjusted Plastik, and doesn't have the elegance of Ximian's Industrial.

If I had the time, I'd try to make a true knockoff. I don't know if this is possible.

For instance, the gradients just don't exist in Industrial like they do in Plastik. Also, The whole theme needs to look flatter with more rounding of edges.

Other than a couple of changes, I can't see the difference between this and Plastik (another fine theme, but it is nothing like Industrial). - Oct 25 2003

If you highlight text in Konqueror, "right-clicking" will not give you a copy option in the context menu. You have to go to Edit, which is a real pain. - May 27 2003

Create a tab Mozilla-style with a button to the left of the first tab by default.

Nice ideas. I would like to see them in KDE. On the topic of Konqueror, why isn't there a copy and paste option in the context menu? It seems like a natural way to do work in the file manager. This is my #1 complaint about that program, the tabs are functional and are low on my priority list. - May 27 2003

I like it. Does anyone know where I can find the bluecurve style for Gnome and KDE in RPM for Mandrake? I don't want it for KDE in particular, but I really like it for Gnome. - May 03 2003
I use Linux because I am interested in computing. I AM NOT one of those who actually thinks Linux can take down Microsoft. I AM NOT one of those who dislikes Microsoft.

I use Windows more than I use Linux. I am interested in both. Anyone who thinks that Linux can take on the Windows marketshare is out of their mind. Maybe they should be hanging out with Steve Jobs somewhere with all of the other hippies.

But if Linux is a socialist operating system, I don't want to have anything to do with it. I think it's just something fun to do, not some ideological movement. - Apr 16 2003
I am sticking to the Eurotrash comments. Europeans shouldn't kid themselves. The United States is #1.

I used to think I was above this and I was silent. That used to show my superior attitude and point of view. However, the silence of the righteous merely lets war protests gain more credibility than they deserve. Gain some common sense and realize your position.

Someone talked about the brains of Europe making society what it is today. My ancestry is eastern European. However, what once was a respectable, formidable continent is on the brink of irrelevance. You have to always be strong if you want to be taken seriously. Reputation is a bad thing to hang on to, and that is merely what one of the poster's base argument was.

Anyone who criticizes my president is the real moron. I would love to tell Gerhard Schroeder and Jacques Chirac to go to hell. The same hatred you share for my leader I likewise share for yours.

But what pisses me off is that, like Microsoft, a monopolistic force has to be better than the nonexistent competition. I am getting down to your level so you can see my point, and so you can realize how great the United States actually is. There is nothing you can do about the war in Iraq, so get over it. - Apr 15 2003
This is way too awesome. I downloaded it before the Eurotrash votes it off of the site. Thanks! - Apr 15 2003

A couple of days ago I saw that Everaldo posted his latest development project, called the Outline Icon Set. Then, he took it down, why is that?

KDE 3.0-3.4 Themes by clee 112 comments

This is why I love KDE. I just saw your initial screenshots and thought that my favorite style had changed for the worst. But if you say it's configurable, I don't have problems with that. Although I do not use Liquid, I can appreciate the great lengths that Mosfet has gone to in allowing custom options.

Do you take feature suggestions?

Perhaps change your progress dialog and check boxes/radio buttons to mimic the Windows XP green and gray ones. Is this possible? I've seen it done in other styles, but I am happy either way with the old look.

This is the cleanest style for KDE around, and I greatly appreciate your efforts. Thanks. - Mar 18 2003
